    Summary

Aziraphale is not built for administration.

He is informed of this in clever language in the letter he received this morning, although he has known it for years. He is only surprised the bureaucracy of the city has taken so long to catch up to him.

Somewhere in Nevaeh, there is a room. It is mostly dark, and damp, and dreary, and were it not for the row of plants on the windowsill, it would be quite intolerable indeed.
There is a person inside this room, who is meant to be deprived of all earthly comforts, who is meant to take on all the suffering of the city, and without him, the great white towers of the city would surely topple into the sea.

That's what everyone outside the room believes, anyway.

Although the new guard, Aziraphale, has his doubts.

They begin the moment the man behind the door begins to tell him a story.

    Summary

In the aftermath of the world not ending, Aziraphale and Crowley adjust to life on their own side in their own ways: with spider plant tending, reluctant shop opening, and a job lot of Thomas Hardy novels which refuse to be sold.

That part is easy. It's the fallout from centuries of rejection which is hard.

“Crowley.” Aziraphale’s tone is broken and determined at the same time. It’s been six thousand years and Crowley has never heard Aziraphale’s voice sound quite like that, not even when he was pleading for Crowley to do something on the airfield. “Kiss me.”

    It’s not a question.

It becomes one, maybe, when Crowley doesn’t reply with action or words of his own, when he leaves it hanging in the echoing cavern of a kitchen, the only thing that exists even though it doesn’t exist at all.

    Summary

After spending six thousand years in Aziraphale’s company, the only thing Crowley’s sure of is that he can’t touch the angel without hurting him. Too bad he never bothered asking Aziraphale about it.

If Crowley could still feel the soft give of rich cloth under his clenched fists, surely Aziraphale could still feel the scorching heat of a demon’s hands on his skin.

If they made it out of this alive, Crowley decided, if there was anything left of the world afterwards, he’d be damned a second time if he ever put his hands on the angel again.

    Summary

Maybe he’d shown Crowley how to perform a few miracles, but that Crowley had taken to them so well was surely a sign that he wasn’t all bad. And maybe Aziraphale had let himself be called upon to perform a few temptations, but that was just testing the will of the faithful if you looked at it from a different angle.

He wouldn’t have needed to resort to these techniques, he told himself, if Heaven hadn’t recalled so many of their other agents over the years, if humans with their sins and their saintliness hadn’t multiplied quite so quickly, if someone had explained to him precisely his position in the Plan. But they hadn’t, and he had to get along somehow.

And anyway, if it were really so bad someone surely would have told him to stop doing it.
