Summary
The mask was a curious thing, and not only for the effect it had on its wearers. It was not necessarily alive, at least not by human standards, but it did have some awareness and will of its own, imbued by whatever being that created it.
The mask rarely had any one owner for long, but this wasn’t much concern to the thing itself. Its primary goal was to spread mischief and chaos, and that could be done well enough, oftentimes even better, when it could hop from face to face. Outside of this goal, the whims of the mask were its own, and didn’t particularly care to stay with any one companion for too long anyways.
Usually, at least.

Summary
Benjamin Krupp was a normal man. He was a principal at a struggling elementary school that now had to deal with monster attacks every once in a while. He disciplined students who only occasionally turned out to be robots, or zombies, or whatever. He came home from work and watched news reports about a hero far more interesting than him saving the day once again.
The world around him may have been strange and chaotic, but he was normal. He had always been normal.
Whatever was going on right now wasn’t possible.

Summary
The problem was that Dakota was so prone to indulgence that he occasionally allowed himself to break his One Unbreakable Rule. The One Unbreakable Rule that he could never tell anyone about the Island, especially not Cavendish.
To combat his problem of breaking his One Unbreakable Rule, Dakota had developed a subset of rules about how he could break his Rule. In specific circumstances, he had decided, it was acceptable to break the Rule.
Like when Cavendish was going to die anyways.
