    Summary

He looks like someone stuck together a bunch of parts they thought looked good on their own and expected the result to look like a person, with no sense of what an actual person looks like.

Ridiculous. He should look utterly fucking ridiculous.

(The most ridiculous thing is that he doesn’t.)

“Goddamn,” Eva says approvingly. “Them calves, though.”

In which Even is simultaneously the biggest loser and the hottest teenager on the planet, and Isak is simultaneously super gay and super pressed about it. Or: a marching band AU.

“Because I think I care way too much,” Even says. “About pretty much everything.”

The bus is driving along some backroad, now, away from the streetlights. Isak can just barely make out the outline of Even’s face in the darkness. The smudged shadows of it.

“What do you care about?” Isak says.

Silence, for a moment. They’re sitting close enough that Isak knows Even’s stopped moving to whatever music he’s listened to.

“I care about the fact that I stepped off on the wrong foot after our first halt,” Even says finally. “And I didn’t play my runs cleanly enough, and I forgot to point my horn to the box at the end of the ballad. So I fucked up too, and I fucked up a lot.”

He leans his head back, face toward the bus ceiling.

“I care about the fact that no one seemed to notice Sana looked like she was going to cry after the director said everything he did about our performance,” he says. “So no one’s going to ask her if she feels okay about what happened tonight, but she’ll probably think she has to pretend she is.”

The bus turns right. White light slices across Even’s face, illuminating its edges for the briefest of moments before turning to darkness again.

“I care about what the director said about the trumpets,” Even says, voice barely above a whisper, words hard to pick out over the noise of the bus. “And that when you heard it, the first thing you probably thought is that it was your fault.”

    Summary

Hank pulls back from their hug first. “You got a place to stay?” he asks.

It could be easy. He could say no, and Connor is certain Hank will invite him over. He’ll insist Connor takes his bed while he crashes on the couch. He’ll blow up the inflatable mattress Connor saw stacked in his crowded closet.

Hank will move heaven and earth to accommodate him, and that’s why Connor can’t. He’s put Hank through one hell of a week, and he can’t add this to the pile.

“Yes, I do,” Connor says, pretending he doesn’t see Hank’s disappointment. “I have a private suite in Cyberlife Tower.”

“Well. Just saying, if you ever get tired of it, know that my door’s always open to you, Connor.”

    “Thank you.”

Hank’s mouth crooks sideways and he ruffles the hair on the top of Connor’s head. “My door. Not my window, okay?”

This time the smile comes easier. “Got it.”

    Is he there?

She doesn’t know. She hadn’t known how to ask, and no one had been subtle enough to convey which of Shireen’s seven would be coming north with her. Not all of Robert’s seven came when I was a girl, she had told herself as soon as she knew that Shireen was coming north. She’d done it so as not to get her hopes up. She’d been sure—well, fairly sure—that it would be far worse assuming Gendry would be riding north with his queen only to be devastated in finding he’d stayed to guard her Hand in King’s Landing than it would be to assume he may not be there and see him when he arrived.

Winterfell. And then, in the voice of a ten-year-old girl, shouting as she charged into battle, Winterfell.

That’s what she tells herself when she stares up at the ceiling of the bedroom that she’d shared with Sansa as a girl, and tries to keep herself from wondering why it is that everyone who shared this bed with her somehow managed to hurt her.

    Bookmarker's Notes

He can't keep his mind closed off. The pure straight focus he used to have - the way he could look down and a face wouldn't be a person, it would be his own face, nothing between his mind and skills and the patient, like he was digging around in his own insides or palpitating his own stuttering heart. No wonder he'd been renowned for a gentle touch.

    Summary

By comparison, being roommates with James Buchanan Barnes, formerly the Winter Soldier, has been a vast improvement. Notwithstanding the part where people openly take pictures of Barnes (and consequently Peter) on campus. Or random people poking Peter in the back during lectures to hiss, are you really the Winter Soldier’s roommate at him. Or remnant HYDRA operatives kidnapping Peter in order to lure the Winter Soldier out (which, really, is too many levels of stupid for Peter to handle).

"You know you're not supposed to call him the Winter Soldier any more, right?" Peter says, while they handcuff him to a pipe. A pipe. "Also this whole thing is kind of messing up my schedule. My two overdue papers won't exactly write themselves."

"He's been very busy." Barnes crosses the kitchen to hand Peter the box of bun cha and spring rolls while mouthing you owe me one at Peter.

Why are you even here, Peter mouths back, but May swoops in with a pair of chopsticks.

"Have you lost weight?" May says, grabbing Peter’s shoulders like he's about to disappear. "Have you not been getting enough sleep?"

"I’ve been sleeping," Peter replies, while Barnes gives him an incredulous look. In the meantime, Michelle has picked up her sketchbook and is doodling what is undoubtedly Peter’s face in crisis.
