    Summary

If Dennis finds out Dee is smoking he'll kill her. Or just whine for an hour before lighting one up and then they’ll all start smoking inside the bar again and Charlie will ash in the tip jar and it'll be a whole fucking thing.

“Keep it down.” She pinches his arm, drags him down a little bit. Thank god Charlie is waving a gun around and distracting Dennis. “Charlie told you? That little shit.”

“What? It’s fine. And if you don’t give me one, I’ll tell Dennis.”

“Fine, fine. God.” She pulls one out and throws it at him. Mac grins, winks.

    “Love ya, Dee.”

    “I hate you.”

    Summary

He finds him licking his wounds under the bleachers.

Mac’s flicking a lighter under a scrawny little scrap of a cigarette and he’s doing it way too fast. He’s slicked his hair back like a John Wayne wannabe and he has blood crusted on his bottom lip - everyone saw the punch up, Dennis included. Bradley Morgan punching Ronnie the Rat in the jaw for tipping off the school office; it’s yesterday’s news and it happened this morning.

“You need some help with that?”

“Fuck off,” Mac mutters. Dennis take the lighter anyway.

He could leave, and Dennis points this out every time. Mac has nowhere else to be, and he says this every time.

It’s Mac’s fault, obviously. It’s been his fault since the day he walked into the goddamn bar with the confidence of the entire Catholic Church behind him and announced his latest crusade, killing whatever tentative thing was growing between them down to the roots.

    Summary

Sometimes Dee thinks the reason she and Mac have never gotten along is that they’re just too much the same; both of them caught up in Dennis’s orbit, thriving on whatever attention he deems fit to bestow on them.

Frank goes back to pouring all of his money into whatever half-baked scheme they come up with this week. Mac remains firmly in the closet. Dennis pulls the Range Rover out of the river, and they all continue pretending his increasingly frequent outbursts of rage aren’t a problem.

Nobody changes or grows. The song remains the same.

    *
Dennis is curled up on the sofa with his head pillowed in Mac’s lap, still sniffling quietly even in his sleep. Mac is watching him with a weird, soft expression on his face, stroking Dennis’s hair in a way that Dee’s sure he can’t possibly be conscious of or he wouldn’t be doing it, at least not while she’s in the room.

It makes her feel uneasy, like she’s witnessing something she shouldn’t be, and she’s torn between opposing desires to leave the room and forget she ever saw anything or grab her camera and get it all on record for blackmailing purposes. In the end, she takes the middle ground and plunks herself down in the armchair, because it’s her goddamn apartment and if she has to feel uncomfortable, it’s only fair that Mac should too.

Several minutes pass in silence, save for the sound of Dee’s chewing and Dennis’s uneven breathing, before either of them speaks.

“He’s getting worse,” Mac says finally, not looking at her.

Mac’s moving, slow and deliberate, wrecking himself against Dennis’s body, and Dennis is never going to be here again. There’s no camera, no blinking red light across the room. There’s just Mac, streetlights striped across his shoulders, and Dennis, vision swimming, reaching up to clutch him close.

    Summary

Three weeks into their delightful slog across Westeros, during yet another charming day of shitting in the woods, eating half-raw squirrel, and trudging his feet bloody, the single most dour and uninteresting woman Jaime had ever met in all of Westeros stopped in the middle of a field, drew a deep breath, and said, “When I was seven, my aunt came to visit with her son. My father told me that as the daughter of the house, it was my duty to show hospitality to my guests and to be gracious to them. I wanted to make him proud. So for three weeks, I let my cousin follow me around and talk to me about spiders.”

    Bookmarker's Notes

“He was going to burn his own grandchildren, why would he care about anyone else’s?” Jaime said, deliberately brutal, wanting to make her look at him again; when she finally did, it felt like triumph to add, “There were caches everywhere. Under the keep itself. He didn’t care. He wanted to—burn them all,” and to watch the horror climbing in her face: yes, my fine lady, the world not so clean and bright as you’d like it to be, he thought at her, viciously. She lowered her head and looked miserable, and he drew a deep satisfied breath: first blood, at last.
