And look, she’s not gonna criticize all the not-Avengers on how they decide to save the universe but next time they do it by smashing two timelines together they should probably make sure they’re the same one.

    Bookmarker's Notes

He kinda sorta knew climbing out the window, things weren't gonna go great for him. And they absolutely didn't, with the whole dying thing. But he just... He thought when he came back, when he hugged May in the threshold of their apartment and called Ned and put on his pajamas and went to bed that everything would be okay.

    And it mostly was.

That was what really sucked. It mostly was okay. Indefinitely better than anything else, any other outcome.

“But you and me, we made it out. We’re not on Eros anymore.”

“I know,” says Miller, tasting dust in his mouth.

    “Do you?” asks Julie.

“Do you?” asks Holden. He doesn’t wait for Miller to answer. “The ones that did this to Eros—they're also out there.”

Miller watches Julie, at the corner of his eye, glimmering under the sterile light.

“Miller," Holden says, insistent, "they've got to answer for what they’ve done.”

The kicker here is, Miller thinks, Holden actually means it.

    Summary

Fiona likes stories, is the problem, though she isn’t half as good at telling them as she’d like to be. She likes coming up with them; she likes selling them; she likes the idea that with the right tone of voice, and the right look on her face, and the right words in the right order, she can change the world, just a little. It’s comforting. As long as she has a story up her sleeve, she’ll always land on her feet.

    Bookmarker's Notes

She does make herself watch, though: the way Rhys goes wide-eyed for a moment, brown and gold; the shocked blankness of his expression; the way it takes him a second to gather himself enough to be hurt, and the way that he looks at her, as if he’s been expecting this all along. It’s worse than betrayal, and it’s worse than disappointment, and Fiona almost wishes that she’d punched him instead. At least she might have broken a knuckle or two that way, a clean hurt rather than this twisting ache in her chest, this slow corrosion. “Yeah, well,” Rhys says, finally. “Join the club,” he says, and turns away, and gets on the stinger — silver and black, and it suits him; of course he’d gone Atlas — and Fiona spares an indulgent moment, at least, to wish she’d gotten a closer look at that. It looks like it’s been stripped down and souped up to handle standard gravity, with augmented speed and boost. It looks like it’s been well loved. There’s a certain beauty in that: taking a broken thing and making it better, caring too much to walk away. That’s the real problem. It isn’t stories or habit or the thrill of the con: Fiona cares, is the problem, and is far better at it than she’d like to be.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Magic is a gift, the Sisters said, but it never felt like a gift to be locked away, and during prayer she would find herself gazing up sullenly more than anything. Later, she found herself staring down at her glowing hand and still never getting the answers she wanted.

Cullen's faith is so simple in comparison, and in many ways he's had far more reasons than her to lose that. He never asks why me or what purpose does this serve, or any of the insolent questions that pop into her head when she finds herself seeking comfort. If his prayers went unanswered, he wouldn't feel betrayed or any less likely to ask again.

“Be careful,” he says, two flimsy little words against something far, far bigger. It’s all he has. That, and the coin in her pocket, and the lock of hair in his.
