Sam: are u kidding me
Sam: its 3 am
Sam: is this a booty call?
Bucky: No. I had a nightmare.
There was usually a minute or so reprieve after Bucky’s confession. Then the phone would buzz and Sam’s name popped up on the screen.
“Okay,” Sam said over the line, his voice pitched low with sleep and concern he didn’t try to hide for the fucked-up mess of a man Steve Rogers left behind for him to deal with. “Don’t tell me about it.”
Bucky was so very tired of telling people things. Maybe he should, but Sam sure as fuck wasn’t his therapist, and Bucky very much did not want to tell him that he could still feel the phantom ache of squeezing someone’s life from their throat on his fingers.
“I’m not. Tell me about you.”
(Or Bucky and Sam actually text more often than his therapist thinks.)
