“Well,” Ave drawled. “I’m just sayin’ that if Pete’s Spidey, then we need to give him time and space to tell us that. It should be his decision. But, in the meantime, maybe we can ask around some of his people to send him an appropriate ‘thank you’ gift, so you know, he knows he’s loved.”

    That…was a remarkably thoughtful idea.

“Aw thanks, I got it from my brain,” Ave said.

“How do we do that, though?” Leo asked. “What’re we supposed to do, just waltz on up to a copycat and be like ‘hey, I’m your boss’s coworker, does he like Emmental or Brie better?”

    Ave sniffed.

    “Why not?” she asked.

(Peter's fellow lab managers figure out that he's Spiderman after he saves their lives in an incident at Stark Industries. They try to figure out how to say thank you without blowing his cover and ruining their friendship.)

“Listen!” Matt huffed. “It just… It doesn’t work, ok? I can’t… We’re too different. We’re too different, Wade.” He turned towards Pete. He wanted to reach out, to put a hand on his arm, to comfort him. He could taste the salt of the tears welling up in Pete’s eyes. He could hear his breathing starting to come rough. Hell, he could practically feel the kid’s heart breaking. “We’re all too different. It has to stop.”

Wade stared at him, dumbfounded. “The fuck you mean we’re too different? It doesn’t work? I know you’re blind but - bullshit. You really can’t see it? We’re perfect for each other. We complement each other. We fit, Matty. We fit together like three fucked up pieces to a completely fucked up puzzle. He’s neutral good. I’m chaotic neutral. And you, Darkness, you’re a chaotic dumbass.”

Brett sighed and looked down at the folder in his hand.
    “Your name is Peter, right?”
    “Lawyer.”
“Peter, we haven’t even started talking. Let’s just take a minute to ease up.”
    “Lawyer.”
“Bud, we haven’t charged you with a crime. This is just talking.”
    “Law. Yer.”

    Goddamn.

    there's something wrong with me
and it reads nothing like poetry

“So,” Matt says once they’re seated. “What brings you here, Miss…?”

“Douglas.” The girl coughs. “Lucy Douglas. Call me Lucy. Please.”

“Okay, Lucy,” Matt says. “What brings you here?”

There’s a long pause, and Matt is about to ask again when Lucy blurts, “Were you born Madeline Murdock?”

    Matt freezes.

“That’s not… that hasn’t been my– my name,” he swallows, “in a very long time.”

“But– but that’s what you were named,” Lucy says. “At first.”

“At first,” Matt echoes warily. He isn’t sure what to think. His birth certificate was changed. Very few people know. Foggy didn’t find out for over a year; Karen still doesn’t know. “Why are you–”

    “And you had a baby.”

    Summary

They say when you assume you make an ass of you and me.

Matt wishes that the Avenger's assumptions about his seeming inability to read the written word did something as benign as making an ass of him and them. Being called illiterate shouldn't hurt, not when he knows he's not, and it's not like he can tell them the truth.

Not that the truth would make much difference. He's just going to have to grin and bear it.

    If he can.
