    Summary

Decades hadn’t really changed commercial travel all that much when it came to air travel. A few years back, before the Crisis, most modern airports had been at or close to full automation. Fear always took people more steps backwards than they had to go though—which was why Gabriel was now stuck in a winding check-in queue in Heathrow, feeling mildly traumatised. Further, far too much further down the line, check-in counter staff flashed forced smiles at the human herd, manually processing passports and luggage. It was like being kicked back to life half a century ago.

“This place is a bomb disaster waiting to happen.”

Gabriel closed his eyes and counted to five for patience. “Fuck’s sake, kid. Do you even process that shit before it comes out of your mouth?”

“Buy anything?” Gabriel asked absently, still drafting his response.

    “You mean I could?”

Gabriel glanced up, puzzled. “What d’you mean? ‘Course you could.”

Jesse’s eyes were round. “I have money?”

“Steak and wine, he says,” Jack mutters under his breath, nursing his wrist. “Movie nights, he says. Flowers and chocolate.”

“I never said flowers or chocolates. Here’s a gun.”

Jack’s eyes light up, more happy than if Gabriel had given actual chocolates or flowers. “Thanks. I love it. A looted gun, just what I’ve always wanted.”

“Nothing but the best for you,” Gabriel mutters, heart beating faster for no reason. He makes a mental note to get Jack a proper gift later. Hell.

“Be there at seven,” Reaper rasps, every word precise and articulate.

“Seven-thirty,” Soldier 76 challenges. Reaper’s grip on him tightens, sending a shock of pain at his arm. Soldier curls inward, turning his face into Reaper’s neck.

“Six,” Reaper says, breathing going shallow, which makes sense, as Soldier is putting his entire weight on him. “And you’re covering for tip.”

    “The man was a monster!”

“So are half the people you saddle me with!”

Jesse flinched; just the slightest tension, more like an extra beat of stillness as his breath caught in his chest. Gabriel, despite not having acknowledged his presence and not being in a position to see the movement, suddenly spun around and fixed the young man with a frightful stare. The terrible control over the catastrophe that was Gabriel’s temper trembled as he bit out two words: “Not. You.”

I can't fucking believe this series cured my depression and taught me the true damn meaning of ohana.

    Summary

Suddenly there’s a sound near his feet and then the slightest pressure on his boot. Peacekeeper is out of her holster and aimed downward before Jesse even looks, and when he does, he blinks.

    “Die!”

    Jesse binks again. What in–

    “Die, die, die!”

With a yelp, he staggers back, nearly tripping over his own feet. There’s an undignified squeak as the thing – whatever it is – tumbles off him and bounces as it rolls a few feet away. Jesse can only stare dazedly as it immediately hops back up, all agitated-like, and gives a frantic flap of its arms. No, wait. Those aren’t arms…
