    Summary

Perhaps it’s an inevitable juncture of the hero’s story: the fateful moment when they are brought to their knees that will mark the separation of who they were before and who they must become after, if there is to be an after; the bitter moment of recognition that all their choices have led them here and no one is coming to help. And it’s one thing to go looking for blood and another altogether to be delivered into the merciless hands of the hunters, stripped and shorn of fight.

There is something unbearably beautiful in the reluctant yielding of his body: the uncurling of his hands, the tilt of his head thrown back and the naked bewilderment of his unfocused eyes. Red looks the way saints are portrayed in the final moments of their martyrdom, blood like holy oil anointing his lips, his throat. Trailing down and across his skin.

Red moves like he is possessed by the vengeful Archangel Raguel come personally to Rykers to mete out justice. Red moves like he is already dead, and just waiting for his body to realize it. Red moves like if he stops moving, he’ll never start back up again.

Like he’ll fall to his knees and he’ll never get back up again.

Frank thinks about bodies like shipwrecks, or haunted ruins. Every inmate that crosses into Red’s bloodied waters is met first with his fists, then his sharp tongue. Or so Frank hears. He does some hunting of his own, tracks down the ragged men that Red leaves behind, applies his own kind of pressure until they tell him what the devil whispered in their ears:

Were you there? Then, before they can utter a sound: If you lie to me. I’ll know.

Whatever Red does to them, sticks with them. They won’t say another word to Frank. Won’t tell him where there is or what happened or why.

He said he’d know if we talk, they say, every single one, and I don’t know how but he will, he’ll know. We never should have—I think he might really be the devil—

A laugh rises out of Frank’s throat unbidden.

    Summary

The first thing Din noticed was the fire in the hearth. Near the hearth was a small, handmade crib, and from the crib came an excited cry. It spread through Din's chest like a bloodstain, perhaps it had in fact pierced his heart. He knew that little voice.

“Hey, you,” said Din softly. He dropped to his knees as the Kid scrambled out of the crib and scampered to him, crawling into his lap and burbling happily.

“That’s the most excited I’ve seen him in months,” said Skywalker. Din hadn’t even noticed him sitting across the room at a rough-hewn wooden table, nursing a cup of something. He wore the same carefully neutral expression he'd had on Gideon's ship, but his clothes were now desert-colored and hung loose around Skywalker's wiry frame. His hair was in disarray and it made him look much younger than he'd seemed on the ship; there, he'd seemed world-weary and ancient. Now, Din felt an insane need to protect.

Skywalker raised his cup at Din in greeting, a lopsided smile on his face. “He’s missed you," he said.

    “Feeling’s mutual,” said Din gruffly.

“Okay, I get it.” Din smiled and patted his fuzzy head. “Grogu. That’s your name. I’ll use it. Okay?”

A distinct feeling of gratitude washed over him, and Din laughed in triumph and relief.

“Wish we’d figured this out months ago,” he said, tapping Grogu on the nose. “I’d have been a lot less confused all the time.”

    Amusement. Relief. Lovelovelovelovelove.

    Oh. That was—

Tears stung Din’s eyes and he blinked them back quickly. There was no point, they slipped down his cheeks and dotted the top of Grogu’s head. Din sputtered and swiped them away.

“Sorry, sorry—” Din lifted him so that they were eye to eye. “Kid—I…”

How did he express this? The words seemed so weak compared to what Grogu was sharing with him. He’d never felt so loved.

    He’d never loved anything more.

Without thinking, Din tipped their foreheads together.

“I know your name as my child,” he murmured, in a language he hadn’t used in a long time. Din leaned back and looked the Kid in the eye. “Grogu.”
