This whole thing comes from tumblr user pandastar102, who requested a fic in which Hob realized Rue had claws when he grabbed them in the forest. This is sliiiiiiiiightly different from what was requested, but it is what got stuck in my head.

Basically, all Ruehob content must always contain Hob COMPLETELY MISUNDERSTANDING EVERYTHING, okay? Okay.

    “You must take him.”

At night before Hermes’ leery eyes stood Despoina herself, clothed in vests of night skies full of glittering stars, her shadowed dark hair tied back in a stripped snood. A mantle red as pomegranate – red as blood – wrapped a small boy cradled in her arms.

    Summary

these stories have a way of repeating themselves, of cycling just like the seasons. she makes the same choices. the same mistakes. he does, too. the stories go on, told and retold.

tragedies, their tellers call them. do they ever learn? asks the rest.
not for the sake of the story— she knows one day she'll wake up and it'll all have wound back to the start.

but here, in the end after the end, the beginning before the start— epilogue, interlude, prologue, some amalgamation of all three— she would tell that audience that asks if they learn, we do, we do, we do. (ain't our fault the fates love a sad story.)
