It's always nice to sit down and unwind with a friendly chat. Sure, it's past 4 in the morning. Yes, Makoto might have broken in somehow. Certainly, her floor was a mess. All troublesome incidences but easily forgiven. Makoto desecrating freshly blended, premium Luwak by overloading on sugar? Much less agreeable.
The earthy flavor of civet was rich and savory by design. Impurities had to be removed.

“Motorin’,” Kazuichi croons to the timing belt. His fingers drum along while he runs through the checklist for stripped parts.
It’s cool, the whole rock scene? He’d tried guitar once, with the pink hair and the- everything- but it hadn’t stuck. None of it had, Kazuichi knows he’s still the same saggy loser, all paper doll dressed in cool people clothes. And then, get this, Hinata lets it slip that they’re not all that cool, after all. He’s just kind of flashy. Dumb looking. Fake. Maybe they could be, on someone cool. Like a coolness paradox.
But the music is cool, and Kazuichi feels kind of cool too. By the end of the week, he knows the tapes front to back. His wrench taps along, he mouths the words. He forgets, for a minute, about the ruined wreck of an island they’re trying to reclaim.
The island, though, it doesn’t exactly forget about him.

Although he suspects after and instead aren't even the correct words for the situation, since best as he can tell, the day in the fake world hasn't happened at all for almost everyone else. So it's just him and Yokoo and Satou doing the morning duty roster, and no one but Kou even thinks for a moment that it should be otherwise.

so, when they get soft moments like this, arms around each other as they’re surrounded in a gentle warmth, it’s relieving. relaxing. it’s safe, knowing that the other is there, that they’re mostly free from memories and flashbacks, that they aren’t alone (because god, it’s so easy to feel alone in this scary place, in hardly familiar bodies, with so much pain it seems impossible to even breathe).
