"Conservation of matter?" Joe repeated, groaning inwardly. It was going to be one of *those* sorts of tales. Methos had a natural knack for languages and history, and had made a grand study of anatomy, but he had never shown any aptitude for fields of science that required more than basic arithmetic. He was much more comfortable with creation myths featuring lonely gods than with the Big Bang and associated theories of expansion of the universe. Any attempt to use physics resulted in a vaguely deist story, as if Methos were struggling to reconcile science with an older, more primitive worldview.

Methos takes a bad quickening and looses his memory for a short period of time. This is not a "rehab" fic; it deals with the bad quickening itself and its immediate aftermath.

Five thousand years. Five thousand years, and I expected him to be sane. I should have left him alone when he asked. If I'd spared him only a few seconds, this would never have happened. But no, I had to get my anger out, had to scream at him for trying to help me. Again. He'd only asked for a few seconds.

    God, he looks so young.

Dying for his country is all well and good, but he's done it already - for five different countries, and twice for France - and he's always held the opinion that it's not something anyone should be required to do more than once. He didn't sign up for duty and patriotism; he signed up for Black Hawks and Cobras.

Five hundred years he managed to live through without stepping back onto a battlefield, certainly without dying on one. Then they had to go and invent planes.

"It's my turn to tell a story. 1781. Rebecca-- de Cordoba at the time. One night she just...popped. Broke every bit of glassware in the house--this was when glass was expensive, remember--including some of the windows. Beat three of her servants bloody. Slaughtered three cows and appeared to look for omens in the innards--"

    "Wait! What? Rebecca?"

"Yes, Rebecca. And then she killed herself with belladonna. Twice. Well, twice that we know of. Her Watcher was one of the servants that got beaten bloody."

"Rebecca?" Duncan gaped. "But she was--"

"Old, MacLeod. She was very, very old. Sometimes the old ones, they flip out for a while."
