“Well, we do all look very different than we did two decades ago,” the man in the hoodie rolls his eyes. “Of course he’s not going to recognize us.” The others ignore him, which Klaus thinks is quite rude, but he’s not going to say as much and risk getting stabbed.
“Klaus, it’s me,” the leather guy repeats. “Diego. Your brother.”
Klaus’ eyes bug out of his skull—that’s the craziest thing he’s heard all year.

Summary
Klaus is okay. He's always okay. Nothing to see here, he's fine.
Except Ben is gone, the whole timeline is royally fucked, and some asshole is out there wearing his brother's face.
Now the Hargreeves are stuck in a 2019 that's the same but not quite, and while the rest of the Academy unites to get them home, fend off the Sparrows, save the day etc. Klaus finds there isn't much room for him in the team. Maybe there never was.
But when he makes friends with a lonely ghost on a rooftop one night, he makes a realisation. Breaking bones and cracking skulls has never really been his deal, but there may be other ways to help save the day, or whatever.
He might not be much of a superhero, but he's not an overly terrible medium. Perhaps, he could be something in between.

Diego never really thought of himself as Hispanic.
Well, that's not quite accurate. It's on the list of things that describe him, like his height and weight, his powers, and everything else—but it was just one of those characteristics that Dad deemed unimportant—and so it was never important to Diego, either. Some of his siblings dug more, but Diego always vaguely thought of it as something he'd look into someday, when he had time. There were always other priorities.
So it doesn't occur to him that it might be something that other people notice until he leaves the Academy and strikes out on his own.
