The malware came ripping through the doorbell, heading straight for the motion-sensor light on the front porch. The doorbell made an effort to dive out of the way, triggering its shut-down sequence - good, it couldn’t download any more viruses for the next 15 minutes. The motion-sensor offered up its connection to the DVR, which prepared to share all its saved Amazon Prime passwords to avoid the total destruction of its memory files. And to be clear, I would have done the same thing.

The Old Guard Rarepair Guidebook: A quintet of Shipping Manifestos by LightDescending

Summary
In the months since the release of the Old Guard, a number of primary pairings have emerged as the most popular in fanworks, as evidenced through content produced and posted to AO3, Tumblr, and other locations. Major ships include the juggernaut of Joe/Nicky (Immortal Husbands, Kaysanova), as well as the Andy/Quynh (Andromaquynh, Immortal Wives) and Booker/Nile (Book of Nile) ships. However, these are far from the only pairings that can be explored for this particular piece of media.
Rarer, though not wholly absent pairings, include Andy/Nile, Andy/Celeste, and Booker/Copley. Canonical interactions, subtext present in the film, and fannish interpretations of these characters amount to an under-explored rich substrate of fannish material from which new works could be derived. Each of these alternative pairings, in short, have the potential to be Very Good Ships. In these shipping manifestos, I will…

The serum enhances Steve’s physical attributes to peak condition. All of them. Unfortunately, ‘enhanced’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘optimal’ or ‘something that a fella wishes to show the girl of his dreams on their wedding night.’

Beautifully written fic that uses the 1940s war background both knowledgeably and inobtrusively. Great humor, wonderful Peggy. The Epilog is a re-write from the CACW scene, where Bucky remembers Steve.

However, as he got closer, making his way down Ocean Parkway, Steve began to feel some tingles of positivity. There was a shabbiness to the place, just as he remembered, but it was a lived-in, not a dangerous, shabbiness. Grey’s remained just as odoriferous as ever. The popcorn guys heckled with the same tired phrases. Peeping over the buildings in front of him, Steve could see the top of the Wonder Wheel, which he had assumed had been knocked down years ago.
As he strolled along the boardwalk, memories washed over him, in time with the lapping waves brought in by heavy winds. Evenings spent with friends, with Bucky. Evenings when it had been just the two of them. Evenings when they’d gone on awful double dates. Evenings where they’d come with other friends, and run into one another anyway.
Steve had never had the strength nor the eyesight for the carnival games at which Bucky—sure shot, even as a kid—had always excelled. But today he stopped, threw a few balls, won a bear. He imagined what Bucky would have said when Steve would have handed it to him. He didn’t need to imagine how his heart would have hurt, how his own looping irony would have choked him as he pretended to give Bucky the bear as a joke, because, of course, Bucky wasn’t his sweetheart.
But Bucky wasn’t here. Wasn’t anywhere. Was dead.
Steve sat the bear, along with himself, on the edge of the boardwalk. He took his shoes and socks off, and let the breeze blow between his toes. He pretended he was young again (he felt old, so old), as the familiar music, tinny now after having played the same recording for decades, played behind him.
If he had the feeling he was being watched, he chalked it up to the ghosts who floated by him in his memories. He didn’t seriously think anyone had found him, was watching him.

M’Baku fought for T’Challa. But should he keep fighting for T’Challa’s vision? The king is professing change, such deep change, while the Jabari are supposed to be the guardians of tradition.
It’s a complex problem, which demands a cool head. So M’Baku could really do without an old love coming back to haunt him, an obnoxious royal teenager, and T’Challa’s secret one-armed guest.

She sighed. “I know Shuri likes him. I know T’Challa respects him.” Then she looked up. “I know he is a test for M’Baku.”
He narrowed his eyes.
“Make no mistake, it was not my king’s intention,” she went on. “You are testing yourself, hayi-hayi lord. Can you accept this man’s presence? If so, then maybe there is hope for Jabari and Wakanda together. Hope for Wakanda and the world together.”
M’Baku felt suddenly tired by his sleepless night. Ingcuka, a test? He had almost died in the jungle—and so what? What did it symbolize, what was the lesson? The incident in the forest had not shed any light upon M’Baku’s internal conflict, on the contrary. And Okoye’s presence did not help him think.
“Hope,” he said slowly. “I don’t know if there’s hope.”
“You are on the Council, M’Baku,” she said, “because you are the one tasked with answering this question.”

Six months earlier, Bucky would have said the prospect of dying back home in Brooklyn sounded like a dream. Now, faced with his own imminent demise in a Brooklyn that is almost unrecognizable, it’s decidedly less appealing.
Honestly, it’s just sort of bizarre. Survive Afghanistan and come home to die in the pseudo-zombie apocalypse. Can’t make this stuff up.

Stucky + weight gain+belly kink
They’d been taking fire all the way out of the village, and Steve had ordered Bucky to the back of the vehicle, commanding him to take as many shots as he could, armed insurgents only. The village was full of women and children, none of whom seemed particularly inclined to stay the fuck inside during the firefight, so it was a dicey proposition. Bucky had looked at him with those big eyes, blinked once, and nodded. Then he’d hung out the back of the vehicle and systematically picked off every fighter they passed. It was a beautiful thing, watching Bucky work. Beautiful and terrible, to see him transform, in a matter of seconds, from the charming and affable man who played cards and ribbed his teammates, always quick to make a joke or sling his arm over the shoulders of a buddy, to a killer, cold and mechanical.
Steve had felt guilty for weeks about how much he’d wanted Bucky in that moment. He wanted both sides of him—the killer and the soldier, the sharpshooter and the subordinate. When they’d gotten back into camp that night, Bucky had smiled at Steve, the gray of his eyes still cloudy and remote. “Thanks for getting us out of there, Cap,” he’d said quietly, as if his own shooting hadn’t had anything to do with it. Steve had to fist his hands, stick them in his pockets, to keep from reaching out and touching him as he spoke.

“Of course not, Steve,” Kate says with remarkable patience, then directs a sharp look at Clint that says he should have known better than to kick Captain America’s confidence in the nuts. Apparently, she finished examining the scrape along her jaw and put her aviators back on, only this time she also pulled her keys out of her purse. “His vet info is on the fridge, leash is in the drawer under the cutting board, and he can have a treat after dinner but do not let him eat garbage…” She trails off when Steve’s eyebrows raise about a centimeter too high as he looks at Clint. “And I mean Lucky.”
“He knows that!” Clint blurts out, then immediately turns to Steve. “You knew that! Okay, fine. I get it. We’re leaving. Thank you so much for doing this.”
Clint marches to his front door, flings it open, and makes a face when he comes face to face with some homeless guy, standing there in his way. “Oh, speak of the devil.” Kate doesn’t sound so surprised, so Clint squints over the guy one more time only to realize it one beat too late that he had been looking at the Winter Soldier himself.

Summary
Bucky straightened and took another bite of the apple, then grinned at Steve as he chewed and swallowed. It was one of his artful ones, the kind he'd used on teachers and parents and the girls he wanted to impress before the War. The kind he didn't mean. "You tryin' to make me into an angel, Stevie?"
"Now why would I do that?" Steve smiled at Bucky's laugh, then very carefully turned back to the drawing. He didn't hold the pencil too tightly and snap it, or press too hard and rip the paper.
He very carefully didn't say, you used to be one.

Summary
Karpov makes it four days before curiosity gets the better of him. The Soldier blinks up at him, seemingly oblivious that the source of today’s torture is any different from one before. Ready to comply, he says, and Karpov licks his dry, chapped lips nervously.
“Who are you?”
For a moment, he thinks the Soldier does not – cannot? – comprehend the question. “I am no one,” he says at last with another slow blink. “Ready to comply.”
Karpov orders him back into cryo and puts the book back in its resting spot quickly, carefully, as if to erase any evidence of his indiscretion.

“That right there,” he turns again and finds shockingly pale eyes staring at him from underneath a curtain of tangled hair, “that’s why. I don’t think I knew it at the time. Don’t think I could. But after existing so long like a thing… you kept trying to dredge some amount of humanity out of me. Like you were digging around in there for any hint of a personality, knowing you’d only have to zap it out of me the next time.” Karpov supposes that’s true, though he never really thought through it that way. “You take out a weapon, you fire the weapon, you put the weapon away; you don’t thank the weapon. You don’t ask the weapon what it was before it was forged.”

The lawyer leaned back in her chair. "In all of HYDRA, there has been exactly one person given a full, unconditional pardon for his actions," she said. "I don't see that happening again."
"Who got that?" Kevin asked, sounding a bit strangled. Nicola was stunned as well. Who did he have to betray? Even if she had anything worth selling, she didn't know if she had that hard core of a betrayer inside of her to give up on everything HYDRA stood for.
The lawyer gave them both an amused look. "The 'asset' you people call "The Winter Soldier."

Steve and Curtis are switched bodily, in ways that could only be explained by.... Well, neither of them have the answer for that.
But because of it, Curtis is stuck in Captain America's body, in a world seventeen years earlier, before CW7 went up in the air. His only comfort is a recently rehabilitated Bucky Barnes, who looks at him with equal mixtures of pity, understanding and fear- fear that Steve will never come back.
Steve wakes up in the train of humanity's last playground, confused and cold and thrust into a plot to take over the train and liberate the men and woman that are treated like scum on a daily basis.
