    Summary

“You threw yourself in front of those creatures’ claws,” Shen Wei says, icily calm. He’s behind Zhao Yunlan now, still circling slowly.

“You’re welcome!” Zhao Yunlan says, grinning. He strains against the thick, pulsing, gold-flecked rope of energy around his wrists, flexing a little to show off, canting his hips, because why the hell not, right? If the stage has been so obligingly set for him, then at least he can put on a show. The movement zings an unwelcome jolt of pain down his left side, and he sucks in a breath, but keeps the grin on his face as Shen Wei strides back into view again.

I'm not in the habit of bookmarking outright smut, especially of the kinky variety, but Strung out in heaven's high is so much more than porn. On one hand, it features the most badass-yet-entirely-believable Shen Wei I've ever had the pleasure of encountering in a purely drama-verse story; on the other hand, it provides a rare example of Zhao Yunlan using his canonically well-established manipulativeness to manoeuvre his relationship with Shen Wei to a place where they both get exactly what they want, physically and emotionally. Add to all this one of the most in-character negotiations re: how far they're willing to go for each other and their duties that I've seen in a fix-it, and I have more than enough reasons to recommend Strung out in heaven's high to like-minded fans. (It doesn't hurt, of course, that the smut is absolutely scorching.)

A fusion of the novel backstory with the drama canon. Because ten thousand years of angst was to tasty to resist, and gods are fun to play with.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Despite considering myself exclusively a fan of the Guardian drama, my logical brain couldn't help but pick at the plotholes and inconsistent worldbuilding that resulted from China's ban on fantasy and supernatural-themed media interfering with a smooth adaptation of the original novel. An ideal solution would have been a fusion of the strongest aspects of the two canons: the characterisation and relationship dynamics from the show and the mythos from the book, which is exactly what Changes sets out to do. For those who're wary of the novel elements: I can give a fair guarantee that this avoids the more problematic aspects of the source material while using its better points to improve the coherency of the drama's storytelling and negotiate a plausible post-canon fix-it scenario.

And quite apart from being plausible, the author goes above and beyond by addressing several issues I had with the show's plot, worldbuilding, characterisation and relationship development, meaning I can safely dub Changes the most wholesome fix-it I've read so far for Guardian.

    (1) The Wandering Fire: Shen Wei's ten thousand years of watching Kunlun's lives and, eventually, finding his own.

    (2) The Advance of the Mountain Wind: Yunlan calls bullshit, at the very end, and everything changes, including himself. The SID can probably cope, but the Ministry may never be the same, to say nothing of Dixing.

    (3) Approach Over the Lake: Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei go apartment hunting.

    (4) The Marriage of Lightning and the Lake: Zhu Hong works on how to be Chief Elder, and falls hard for Ya Qing in the process.

    (5) Swallow the Mountain: Zhao Yunlan provides a temptation that Shen Wei has no intention of resisting. Even if they are in his office.

    (6) The Influence of Mountains: The SID introduce Dixing to the police as ordinary citizens. The Supervisory Bureau may be having heart attacks in the background.

    (7) Grace and Radiance: Shen Wei gets impatient and decides a desk is just as good as a bed, for some things. Zhao Yunlan has to agree.

    (8) Contemplate the Wind Above: Four people are wakeful at night. Shen Wei thinks about Ye Zun. Zhang Shi thinks about her new life. Ya Qing thinks about Zhu Hong. Zhao Yunlan thinks about his own past.

    (9) The Innocence of Thunder: Professor Ouyang's work isn't through causing trouble, and everyone finds out why injuring Zhao Yunlan is an extremely bad idea. The Minster finds out a lot of things no one bothered to tell him earlier, and possibly wishes he hadn't taken the job.

    (10) The Heavens' Gracious Restraint: Shen Wei has a judgement to make. Zhao Yunlan just wants to understand his family.

    (11) Sinking in the Deep Waters: Minister Guo and Zhao Xinci try to deal with some of the things revealed about Zhao Xinci's past, and decide what it will mean for the future.

    (12) The Radiant Thunder: Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan have a sort-of honeymoon trip, which involves conversations they should probably have had sooner.

    (13) The Conflict of Water with the Heavens: Zhao Xinci invites Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei to dinner and an argument. Predictably, Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei are too busy trying to protect each other to bother about themselves.

    (14) The Release of Thunder: Zhao Yunlan may have finally figured out a way to get Shen Wei to relax completely.

    (15) Thunder's Movement: Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei go out clubbing, which results in Shen Wei getting a bit prowly.

    Summary

Dixing is one of the last States standing against Emperor Zhao Xinci’s attempt to conquer and unite all the lands. The Crown Prince, Zhao Yunlan, has been fighting at the front lines of the war against Dixing for years when his mother gifts him with a concubine. Shen Wei is beautiful and magnetic and Zhao Yunlan falls in love with him instantly. But Shen Wei isn’t just a concubine; he’s a Dixing spy who’s being embedded in Zhao Yunlan’s household to gather intel and potentially assassinate the prince. He doesn’t expect to fall in love.

Chrysanthemum Flowers and Jade Daggers is definitely too cheerful and wholesome to pass muster as an authentic wuxia AU, but do I care? Not one bit, because the story is entertaining, the characterisation is satisfying, and the romance is adorable without being cloying. If you're in the mood for an unabashedly fun read (a rare commodity in a fandom that's often very angst-driven, though understandably so), look no further!

A couple months after their return from the 'dead', Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei are finally getting something of a much-deserved break. Then the SID gets called in on a case: a triple murder of government officials on a public street. Zhao Yunlan knows one of the victims way too well.

There's a distinct gap in the body of fanworks for Guardian which should by all rights be occupied by casefic, considering the strong emphasis show canon puts on the genre. Flesh from Bone, Soul from Flesh really delivers in this regard, with excellent plot and satisfactory characterisation to back it up.
