The kid was right about it being a test.
He was just wrong about who the test was for.

Everything about them happened in seconds. Their first meeting was quick, with Tony landing next to the Captain, each man giving a curt nod and name in greeting. Their argument on the hellicarrier took mere seconds to escalate. Until Steve was goading Tony into putting on the suit and going a few rounds and Tony not so subtly reminding Steve that he wasn’t afraid to hit an old man.
It was only seconds of staring at Tony on that New York City Street, his arc reactor dark, no rise and fall of his chest, for Steve to know that inside the tin can, was a good man.
Then Ultron happened, and it took seconds for their world to change, seconds for Steve to throw his shield at Tony and for the billionaire to send a repulsor blast back. They went from laughing and relaxing to standing on an edge thousands of feet above solid ground.
And now…now everything’s changed. And all it took was a combination of seconds; of decisions made, actions performed and words spoken that they couldn’t get back.
Just a few ticks of the clock for their world to shatter.
It’ll take more than that to make things right.

"How the hell did they get here?"
It was a running theme in both men's minds. It popped up when they were arguing within the first few hours they'd met, when Steve watched Tony's house fall into the Pacific, when Tony watched Steve fall from the sky, when Sokovia was hovering above the Earth. But somewhere in all that falling, they fell for one another, and that phrase turned into: "Thank God we made it here." It followed in the moments after their first kiss, in soft caresses against skin, in their first time coming together.
But Steve has found that phrase entering his mind again. And he knows that all too soon, they're going to say something or do something that cannot be taken back. And there will be no where to go, but forward. Tony on the other hand, is hoping to stop all of this before it gets to that point.
I have watched both trailers more times than I can count. This movie has broken me and it's not even out yet. I am a Stony shipper, and this is my way of writing out those feelings and making sense of the scenes we've been given. And hopefully, keeping the bloodshed and broken hearts to a minimum.

Three years ago, if someone had told him that he would've been going shot for verbal shot with (an ALIVE) Captain America, getting ready to fight an alien army and one sassy God, and almost get sucked into a wormhole, he would have asked what they were smoking and if they'd share. But now, after everything with the Madarian and Extremis, and Steve and Natasha's little adventure in DC, it seemed like Ultron was the final candle on a really fucked up cake. But they survived- together. And somewhere along the way Tony Stark and Steve Rogers fell for one another; in the midst of all the craziness, they worked. But who could have imagined that before the war in New York, a young woman was fighting for her life, only to be saved by a serum that many thought to be lost. When Natasha brings this young woman into the two Avenger's lives, hearts are broken and mended, and lives are on the line.

It took years for Natasha to understand Tony on a personal level, and in that time their relationship has ended up as many of Natasha’s do: they are colleagues who can work together professionally, but don’t even pretend to trust each other. She sets her sights on repairing their relationship, but with Tony Stark, nothing is ever going to be easy.
Or, Five times Tony Stark did not sleep with Natasha Romanoff, and one time he did.

They all noticed it from time to time, but it never dawns in any of them what it meant, or that it should even mean anything.
It showed up about six months after The Avengers moved in to Starks Tower.
It, was something blocking the light from Tony's reactor. Wasn't large, not much bigger than a fifty cent piece.
If any of them had thought about it, they passed off as something Pepper had given him but then they found out Tony and Pepper had split about the time The Avengers moved into the tower. But none of them knew that because Tony never said anything and Pepper was still showing up, still brow beating Tony into doing Stark Industries business. But then as CEO that would still be her job.
It all looked the same. There were never any girls and they all knew Tony wouldn't deny his sexual appetite. So even though Tony was around two master assassins, another certified genius, a demigod (though not all knowing) and a super solider, none of them mentioned it.
