    Summary

She smiles. “There’s a rest stop no one maintains 15 miles ahead.”

He’s stopped asking how she knows things like that, which is frankly rude of him considering how much she enjoys smiling mysteriously and giving bullshit explanations that don’t bear even a passing resemblance to the truth. She retaliates by putting her feet on the dashboard. He gives her a sour look, but says nothing.

Steve is easy to be silent with. At first glance he looks like he should be obnoxiously friendly, but in practice he seems to approach most social interactions as though they’re an inescapable responsibility he doesn’t feel he has a right to complain about.

    Summary

Maria Elena Popescu’s apartment building might be a faceless grey dump, but it’s her faceless grey dump, and she’s proud of it. It’s small – three floors, and three very poky flats to a floor, except for the bottom floor that was the entrance hall and her own quarters – but that just meant she knew everybody who lived here, and liked them. Nobody was allowed to come in here and make it worse, or disreputable, not even tall dark and good-looking foreigners who reacted with an appropriate amount of fear when Maria eyeballed them.

    Summary

“What are we toasting to?” he asks as Carter takes a seat in the rickety chair by his bed.
“The future,” she declares, raising her glass.
The future. Bright and shiny and full of possibilities. Dark and mysterious and unknown. A world without Steve.
He lifts his own glass, breathes through the sharp grief cutting into his lungs. “The future.”
(May it be a bearable one.)
    Their glasses clink.
