Summary
“You seem like you really need to blow off some steam,” Beauregard says, propping her feet up on the edge of the desk. “But like, not in a fighting ring, because that’d probably end with someone getting turned into dust.”
Astrid gives her a perfectly neutral look. “So you’d prefer that a more acceptable target be disintegrated.”
“Obviously.” Beauregard shrugs.

Summary
The calm, collected archmage is a far cry from the woman who watched her teacher’s trial with steel-hard vindication in her eyes. It’s odd, really — Jenna’s entire life could be described as a pretense, and yet she finds herself living something terribly akin to truth in her day-to-day. Astrid, on the other hand, seems to collect masks like Jenna collects novelty shot glasses and would probably have an allergic reaction to showing a single honest feeling.
Gods. She wants to take Astrid Beck apart layer by layer and figure her out.
(The Cerberus Assembly's newest archmage catches Jenna Iresor's attention. Both of them decide to play some dangerous games about it.)

Summary
“There are ways to undo enchantments,” Astrid says, and Eadwulf shakes his head in mute refusal. “Simple ways, for arcanists of our ability level.”
(A hypothesis is tested, a revelation is made. None of it is surprising.)

Summary
The fact that six mercenaries and a weasel have stowed away on the highest-security vessel in the Dynasty’s fleet is, technically, a serious problem that bodes poorly for the rest of their journey. But Essek is delighted. He’d been dreading a long and tense voyage to Mutalos, without any company except for a skeleton crew comprised mostly of military personnel, the awkward spare scourger, and his—
It feels strange, to think of Beck as his wife. Even calling her his enemy feels too intimate.
(In which Essek agrees to a political marriage to ensure intergalactic peace and keep himself alive, only to discover that his wife has married him for exactly the opposite reason.)

Summary
“Surely, my friend, you are familiar at this point with the concept of a vegetable patch?”
Essek recognises the look on Caleb’s face immediately as one of teasing mischief, and so in turn rolls his eyes instead of getting truly annoyed. “Shockingly, yes. Vegetables are not an unknown entity in Rosohna. Though that does not entirely explain your sudden preoccupation.”
“Hardly a preoccupation,” Caleb laughs, “Just a thought. One I have been privately entertaining for a while now. It would be nice, don’t you think, to have more food from our own backyard?”

Bren was a farmer's son once. So too is Caleb.

Summary
It has been a long time, but the shadow that crosses Essek’s face is no longer unfamiliar to Caleb. He thinks he can place it now that he has seen it so often—it looks very much like guilt.
“I am happy here,” Essek says. “How could I not be?”
For some reason, the assertion is thrown at Caleb with more force than is called for.
Who is Essek really trying to convince: Caleb, or himself?
