    Things don’t feel hopeless at first (not like they would).

    Not hopeless at first, but definitely other things, like self pity. Pity that she lost the only person she really had in her life to lose.

    It isn’t just self pity that she is wallowing in, either. There are lots of other feelings too: anger, regret, guilt. It’s the guilt that eats away at her the most, sometimes. It makes her feel bitter and self-loathing. Because, wasn’t she the one who encouraged Alex where the others didn’t? Ride or die, she told her. Maybe if she hadn’t said that, Alex would still be here. But it still wasn’t hopeless yet.
