    "You died on a Monday.

I watched it happen, because you asked me to.

Please, John. Will you do this for me?

So I did. Of course I did.

Because that’s the way it always was with us. You asked, and I said yes."

There are pivotal days in every life. John Watson's is no exception.

    Bookmarker's Notes

I heard this read aloud by the author and choked and cried on just about every day of this fic. And there's another from Sherlock's POV! Oh frabjous day.

    Summary

Sherlock presses his nose into my hair and inhales. “Told myself the whole way here we wasn’t gonna get into this again,” he says low. His breath moves soft against my scalp, and his words rumble deep into my bones. It sounds like the open sky throwing wind against the boulders up on Baker, rattling the thin walls of the tent with the rushing force of the mountain.

I hum. I don’t believe him for a second – steppin’ out of his gleaming white Ford back in Signal with his best shirt on and his curls all combed lookin’ up at me like he just took a breath after five years of holding it.

I know because I did the same.

    Bookmarker's Notes

I'm saving this for when I can afford a huge cry. The first page alone ripped my heart out and stomped that sucker flat. Clearly this is a gifted writer with an ear for register and dialect, and those who recommend it on Tumblr swear that those things are not Annie Proulx's language. Looking forward.

Update: In the comments on this fic I was promised choking sobs and a mass of sodden tissues, but I didn’t cry. "He Was A Friend of Mine" was so absorbing, so involving, and so moving, that what it did stun me with “thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears.” For hours after reading it I was in a daze, and not just a generic daze—a specifically *desert* daze, deep in the light and colors and patterns and smells the writer evoked so magisterially. John’s voice was so intricately done and so convincing and consistent, I feel like I know him. (And I want to listen to this as a podfic, please, someone.) John’s representation of Sherlock was so compelling, heartwrenching; the dialogue John quotes so laconic, but his loquacity in John’s descriptions so familiar. I join all those who mentioned their gratitude for "fixing" not just BBC Sherlock, but Brokeback Mountain: I’ve never been able to read the story or see the film after the first, devastating time.

I can’t pick out a quotation; it’s all too good. I can only pick out a feeling: that Baker Mountain without Sherlock was “meaningless space,” that the pair of them together brought all that wild chaos into focus around them. This is where the fic is exactly like the series: these two characters bring the world into focus for each other, whether the chaos is the loneliness or despair of London, or of the West.

    THANK YOU.

    Summary

Ella had been right about the trust issues, she had been right about the PTSD, and she had not exactly been wrong about the blog, either, had she, though John’s efforts in that department hadn’t worked as she might have hoped. John could write about Sherlock, he could write about their cases, he could respond lightly or sternly to comments; what the blog couldn’t teach him to do was to look at a feeling and name it.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Ancientreader is always a thrill to read, and this is a humane and deft look at John Watson that includes and illuminates his beating of Sherlock in TLD. Too many wonderful passages to quote more than a few:

"If he did think the words, they would go something like this: He loved Mary, in spite of everything; their bed doesn’t belong in the flat he will share again with Sherlock. As the words are not to be thought, so the reasons are not to be examined."

"Look back, and be transubstantiated into a pillar of salt.

Look back, and the woman following you up from Hades will vanish into nothingness again.

John doesn’t look back. Pursued by ghosts, he lives."
