    Bookmarker's Notes

I generally avoid stories less than 1,000 words but wow, am I glad I found this one.

This was a little bit intimate, a little bit sensual.. I wish I could give kudos more than once. Exquisite.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Probably the first RyuSatsu story that really impressed me. I have read this many times now, and each time it draws me in anew.

The language is a big part of this story for me, in many ways. The use of Second Person POV is unique but it combines with the style and word choice into a mesmerizing read. The emotions are immediate, and the voices of each character matches them well enough that it doesn't matter who is speaking, you can feel it just as deeply. The repetition of phrases throughout chapters and sometimes the entire story is also something I loved, although some of the phrases flowed better than others. Some seemed to fit well in a couple spots, but not so well in another. Despite all this, I believe that the language and style of this story are a major plus. One of my favorites was "you might have bitten off more than you could chew".

Both Satsuki and Ryuuko's POV are done well, as are Mako's (though she only gets one turn - on the other hand, her mother gets one too), Inumuta's, and Soroi's. Sadly, Gamagoori, Sanageyama, and Jakuzure are a bit harder to tell apart initially, though it usually only takes a paragraph or two to figure it out.

The first half is largely a character study of Satsuki, but the story is also a romance. And while it may end more quickly than one might like, it is most certainly not rushed.

A look into Shizuru's (and Natsuki's) mind post-Carnival. There's no brushing things off here - the effects of Shizuru's actions towards Natsuki have very real consequences for both of them.

The POV switches between First Person for both Shizuru and Natsuki. While there's a number of typos throughout the huge work and the pace is slow (action is almost non-existent for the first half of the story), the way the author writes is realistic and not bogged down by metaphor. The characters, and Shizuru in particular, may use metaphor, but the writing itself is very clear and straight-forward. If the character's thoughts get confusing, you know it's because the character themselves is confused, not that the author couldn't put it to page properly.

And while some may be turned off by the sheer amount of words and chapters that cover the first half before an real action is introduced, the time covered in the story itself really only amounts to a week up to that point - a month in total.

It is certainly difficult and complex, but Shizuru's thoughts are complex. It's my opinion that this is the most complete and realistic examination of Shizuru's character to date. Natsuki's thoughts are explored in the same way, and there's nothing easy about this pairing. The story also goes into possible events post-Carnival, including political and, in Shizuru's case, familial ramifications. Shizuru's family is well thought-out.

The one disappointment I had from this fic was that the other HiMe are largely absent, and even the ones who are there (such as Mai) don't get their own chance at showing their point of view. It's certainly understandable in a fic dedicated to exploring Shiznat realistically that Shizuru and Natsuki are the two featured, but the other HiMe (and Tate and Reito) feel more like an afterthought, for the most part. Again though, this fic covers a relatively short period of time, and there's certainly room for a sequel down the line, and hints of what the other HiMe are up to or may get up to in the future.

Quoting the author's note preceding chapter 27:
"What am I showing in this story? A dangerous question to ask a vain author... but when Reito said 'even demons can be forgiven', that's this story. Without jumping universes or sweeping Shizuru's crimes under the rug and pretending nothing bad happened. Of course, it's a lot of work. But isn't that what redemption is?"

A wonderful story about Korrasami beyond death. Questions brought up here are ones I've entertained myself. Does everyone reincarnate and only the Avatar remembers? Is there a way for others to remember? For Korrasami lovers, this is a beautiful dream.

(Linked here to Ace Sanchez's personal site as captured on the Wayback Machine. The story is also hosted by The Pokemon Tower and Fanfiction.net under the name "Acey", though the FF version is not complete.)

Finished back in 2001, this story is the reason I began reading fanfiction. I stumbled upon it by accident and the Darker and Edgier vibe of the fic opened up new worlds for me. After this, I couldn't get enough of Pokemon fanfiction, and eventually I got into other anime/manga and fanfiction fandoms. Almost two decades later, here I still am, and I don't know how many times I've reread this fic.

This story was begun before the second generation games came out and finished before the third. So the only second gen Pokemon to make an appearance is Misty's Togepi, similar to the anime. Also, dark type Pokemon were included from the beginning, even though they had not yet appeared canonically. TVTropes also considers this to be the "first 'prototype' dark Pokemon fanfic".

For older fans, this will be a throwback to when Ash and Misty was the only reasonable ship, and Jesse, James, and Meowth were the only bad guys. For newer fans, a lot of the things you've come to expect from Pokemon may be missing. Remember this is generation one!
