Updated summary: Waverly is commuting to the Big City to take college classes, when she has a chance encounter with a police academy cadet named Nicole. They strike up a friendship and maybe more. The story occurs in the year before Wynonna returns to Purgatory, but general aspects of the story are intended to be canon-compliant (e.g., the curse exists, Willa is dead, etc.). But most of the story takes place in the Big City.
Original summary: Yup, it's another college AU. I'm pretty new to this fandom (and fanfic in general) and didn't realize this was such a popular AU. But I've already written 90% of what I have planned so here goes nothing.
This will be a bit of a slow burn toward "mature."
They were in love once but it wasn't enough, and three years is a long time. When Waverly comes back to town unexpectedly, things get complicated between her and Nicole. Can they work through their hangups over the past?
Purgatory ain’t no place for a hero. It belongs to the cursed. To the vampires, the witches, and the beasts. Step inside the boundaries, if you dare, but stay too long and something will find you... and then Black Badge will make sure you stay.
The uneasy peace that has existed for over a hundred years is threatened, and Waverly Earp will need every bit of help she can get to stop her home going to hell in a Stetson. That includes bringing her estranged sister back from a deal that practically cost Wynonna her soul, and enlisting the help of the newest, currently human, Sheriff’s deputy.
Welcome to Purgatory. You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.
Nicole Haught had always enjoyed life in general. Things weren’t always great, but nothing entirely awful had ever really happened to ever throw her life off course. But at this very moment, it felt, for the first time in Nicole’s life, that the universe was against her.
Nicole moves to Purgatory in her junior year of high school. As her old school's star player, she's determined to join the basketball team, but a sexist coach and an even more sexist team makes it quite difficult. With Wynonna Earp on her side, Nicole has the means to get through the school year, even if her new best friend's little sister is a very distracting cheerleader with a shitty, possessive boyfriend.

“You can’t change what the world has decided has to happen.”
Nicole huffs, frustrated. “But why can I see things if I can’t change them?”
Her momma chuckles. “That’s just the way it is, baby. I know, I know. It’s not fair and it’s a lot of responsibility, but it’s our… our blessing and our curse."
In which the Earps aren't the only ones who are cursed.
