    Summary

What if the psychic bond between them worked a little differently?

    ***

Liz punches her pillow and flops onto her back, sighing as she stares up into the inky darkness of her bedroom. It’s late — or, rather, very early — and sleep is proving as elusive as answers have been for the last couple of days.

A cool night breeze drifts through her open window, making the edges of her thin curtains dance in the silver wash of moonlight. Outside, she can hear sounds of the desert at night - small creatures rustling in the scrub bushes, skittering on nearly silent feet across the baked sand. They used to bother her, these unknown sounds of things beyond what she can see.

They don’t now. She’s discovered that there are much larger mysteries to solve.

    Summary

Michael has spent his whole life staring up at the sky, but Alex Manes’ smile is still the brightest thing he’s ever seen.

    ****

There’s less of Alex than there used to be.

Physically, yes, but the losses run so much deeper than that; the war stole far more from him than just his leg.

He manages to hide it fairly well, but Michael knows. The brightest parts of the boy he once loved have been scraped away, leaving him hollow and distant and a little cold, as if the fire inside him has gone out.

Or nearly has, anyway. An ember still burns, buried deep and almost swallowed in the dark, but Michael sees flashes of it in those moments when he’s tangled up with Alex, their clothes stripped away and pasts cast aside.

And Michael is determined to coax that ember back to life… if only he could figure out how to do the same for himself.

    Summary

Michael figures out how to get back to their home planet, but it’s a limited time option — leaving them only twenty-four hours to decide where they truly belong.

    ***

Michael furiously scribbles out the final calculations, his free hand raking through hair he hasn’t stopped to wash in days. A cup of coffee sits at his elbow, so long forgotten that mold has begun to grow across the dregs.

He’s so close. An entire lifetime devoted to understanding the technology powering the bits of the wreckage they were able to salvage, to tracking the movements of stars and deciphering the symbols embossed on the iridescent fragments, and it’s all finally coming together.

He scratches out a few more numbers, checks over them with a trembling pencil, and then pushes back from the small table in his trailer that he’s been using as a desk.

    That’s it. He’s done.

    He can go home.

…Now he just has to decide if he really wants to.
