Stiles and Derek are literally born for each other. Derek is an Alpha, the next Hale pack Alpha. Stiles is a Spark and Derek's mate. Their families have known since Stiles was born with the mark of his wolf mate, not to mention there has been a member of his family that has been an Emissary to the Hale pack for over a 1000 years. Unfortunately Derek lets others get in his mind and convince him that being with another guy is wrong. He devastates Stiles because they've been told their whole lives that they're fated to be together and run the pack one day.

“He just came in,” Stiles says quietly. “He just— He just showed up and came at me. We struggled.” He sucks in a breath. “He died.”
“Are you okay?” Derek’s eyes scan his face, and Stiles wants to scream.
“No, I’m not okay,” he snaps, and then instantly wishes he could take it back, but Derek barely reacts.
“Did he hurt you?” he rephrases, and honestly Stiles has no idea. He can’t feel anything, but he shakes his head against the cabinet, trying to get his fucking lungs to work. Derek pulls away, removing his hands from Stiles’ body to take stock of the situation. His eyes flit around the kitchen, the blood on the floor, Stiles in the middle of it. His face is grim.
