Summary
Some animal wails out of the depths of the forest. The sound is huge, full-throated, drowned in cold; deadened by distance and scattered by a welter of trees, it’s a voice made of mist, an urge toward sound nurtured by hot blood then turned loose.
An American woman transferred to Stockholm goes on a summer hiking trip with her coworkers.
“The canopy is too tight-knit to see anything from the air.” He glances at each of them. “Fires have been sighted—it’s rumored that there’s a handful of scattered indigenous groups living off-grid in the deep interior—but no one’s ever seen them.”Her first night on the trail finds her enchanted by the woods; her second night finds her distracted by her past.
“I’d hoped…” She sighs. “I thought I’d get through my time here, in Sweden I mean, without telling anyone.” She picks up a long thin twig, pokes the embers. “But I guess not.”
But the third night will change her life forever.
