Summary
“Don’t say Hannibal,” said Beverly.
“I’m saying Hannibal,” Will said. Beverly slumped back in the passenger seat, throwing up her hands.
“Swans defend territory, Will! They don’t travel! We’re not talking Garrett Jacob Hobbs killing girls in five states, here!”

Summary
Dr. Hunt was less interested in the food than he was in the sculpture. He had recently begun to take inspiration from the Brazilian Anthropophagists – the mid-20th-century Surrealist followers of Oswald de Andrade's post-colonial "Cannibalist Manifesto" – largely out of a perverse sense of humour. Alone, by the fountain, he fixed Oxóssi in his mind's eye and banished the rest of the party from his consciousness, in great successive sweeps of light. The noise and gaiety, the serving staff, the guests and hosts themselves: each disappeared in its turn.
He left the bright lamps, and the feast.

Summary
“Relieve me, Holy Father,” said Lenny. There was a pause.
“Relieve me of my position, Holy Father,” Andrew repeated back, tonelessly.
“No,” said Lenny. He reached for the button under his desk. Andrew dropped Angelo Sanchez’s file in front of him.

Summary
His tie hung loose, the ends no longer tucked in. Will ran it through his fingers, examining the grenadine’s nubbly texture. Then gave it a sharp tug, not very hard.
“I like the colour,” he said. “It suits you.”
Hannibal said nothing. Will held him, as if on a leash.

Summary
Her new father promised her beginner’s exercises. I’ll bring them next time, he said, with a smile, when she remarked on the piano. She didn’t ask if she could — should — play, but the expectation was unspoken. This is part of what she needs to learn.

Summary
They had made love again, afterward. Perhaps they made love every day.
Hannibal's memory did not constitute their coming together as discrete occurrences, but a single, bright, shimmering structure: continuously elaborated and expanded. There was so much yet to discover about Will, his abandon and reticences and curious lacunae of experience, territories unknown – Hannibal was realizing – even to Will himself. All of it endlessly delightful.

Summary
“The texture is suggestive, yes,” Hannibal said. “One might say a game of allusions, which is not unusual in the pastry arts. Consider the shape of a cream puff: plump, cloven in half, and generously filled for display.”
“Éclairs are phallic,” Will said, faintly. He realized, with humiliation, that his legs had reflexively fallen open as well.
Custard was everywhere.

Summary
He remembered, now -- how had he not remembered? -- that Will was the director of the BSHCI. It was Will who had placed Hannibal in this cell, Will to whom the guards and orderlies answered. Will held the key to the door that was not there.
Will had ordered his punishment.

Summary
For a while, he'd thought that was all it had been: that Will came cheap and was easily owned and had never known that about himself. That Hannibal had taken him in and fed him with friendship, like one of Will's own strays, and taught him how and what and whom to want. Nothing to titillate Freddie Lounds' readership, when you took it apart and looked at it.
But that wasn't the entire truth, either. He knew that. He'd known it all along.

Summary
“I was in Italy last year,” she said. “Rome, the actual city. I was there for five days, for a trade show.”
“And what, now?” Rome settled on the edge of the bed, one foot tucked under her. “It made you think of me?”
“It made me think of those stories you used to cap your act with, at the Girdle. About the Roman Empire, and the priestesses of Beauty and Love. How you could buy doves at the Temple of Venus, so you could cut their throats on the altar, or you could make a wish and set them free -- remember that?”
“You thought that story was bullshit,” said Rome.
“Well,” said Paris, “I was a little girl with a chip on my shoulder.”

Summary
Hannibal wanted to cook again. He wanted to ply Will with more than hot drinks and canned vegetables and fish. He wanted to make fine dishes, kingly extravagances from Carême or Escoffier, and watch the involuntary pleasure in Will’s face and body as he ate. He wanted, too, to take Will’s hands between his, and sometimes he did, but it was not enough -- he wanted to be able to sate Will, to fill him a little too much, to match the way Hannibal felt when he looked at him.

Summary
“He wouldn’t want to be buried here,” said Will Graham, managing to sound as if he cared what Grutas might have wanted. “He didn’t understand freedom when faced with it; he crawled on the ground and no longer had the strength to transcend his circumstances.” He picked up a snail and looked at it, turning it between his fingers. “As those responsible for his life and death, we owe him the honour of metamorphosis.”
Is he incapable of not being creepy, thought Chiyoh, or is he merely not making an effort?

Summary
He explained the intricacies of his hobby to Rei the second – or perhaps the third – time they got drunk together, on the cheapest beer carried by the Antarctic convoy. A regular boomerang was thrown at an angle approaching vertical and returned in a horizontal hover from behind, but a long-distance competition boomerang was thrown at an angle less than 45 degrees and returned, diving, on a path that projected on the ground roughly as an elongated ellipse. Its highest point was near its furthest.
(His line of sight is obscured, but his heart still traces the path of its flight.)
