And so you have adapted.
Or at least you tried. For there is a small, yearning part of you that you just cannot get rid of. A part that lives and breathes as your darkness does, that moves through your body and no matter how often you catch it, it stubbornly resurfaces just a short while later, in another part of you. Besting you, besting the darkness, fluttering lightly and softly through you like a butterfly.
You hate that part.

Laurence could feel the familiar sweat of awkward social interactions breaking out on his forehead and hands. But it was not even his fault; how was he supposed to know this bloke's last name when Temeraire introduced him differently! Now that Tenzing - Mr. Tharkay, damn it! - was standing next to Temeraire Laurence could feel his hawk-like eyes boring into him. He didn’t like the feeling. Not in the slightest. It felt like Mr. Tharkay knew Laurence had just called him by the wrong name again in his mind.
Someone was knocking at my door and – without waiting for my reply – opened it.
“There you are, Anne. I was looking for you at the staff meeting, but I couldn’t find you. Here, I want you to meet my brother. Frederick, this is Anne, the wonderful social worker I have told you about. Anne, this is my brother Frederick. He will be working with us for the coming twelve months for the sports project.”
