"You're the prince? You?" the boy says, voice full of shock. Arthur's eyes narrow. The boy's eyes narrow in return, gone critical in the most insolent way possible.

Merlin and Arthur form a bond when Merlin is an annoying kid. Then Merlin leaves for a few years and comes back all grown up. Most of the story after that covers the struggles of Arthur inheriting the responsibilities of Camelot from his dying father, but with an undercurrent of Merlin-related sexual tension.

Arthur doesn't care much about the popular radio program Dragon's Lonely Hearts until his ex-girlfriend calls in to slag him off and get advice. When he calls in and has an on-air argument with the host, it starts off more than he expected, including meddling friends, overinvolved fans, and maybe love.

Absolutely darling. Of course, I'm a sucker for correspondence courting.

    Summary

“So let me get this straight,” Arthur said, folding his fingers together as the man in front him awkwardly shifted. “You are under the impression if you win the favor of my servant that you will then win my favor?” He asked and the nobleman shifted again.

“Well, sire.” He said “That is the common consensus among… The chatter.”

“The chatter.” Arthur repeated and his mind flashed to all the kindness Merlin had received from other nobles. Dear God.

    Or

Merlin has all of Camelot (and neighboring kingdoms) wrapped around his finger and Arthur is beginning to resign himself to the fact his servant somehow has more power than he does.

“I was wondering if you might come home with me.” Merlin stops mid-rant and stares at him, and then down at his panini again, and back at Arthur. This is a panini of lies and pain. He can tell already.

“For Christmas? I’ve got an uncle and a mother and a sister waiting for me at home, in case you hadn’t remembered, I’m not going home with you just because you’re a workaholic.”

“No, it’s. My mum might be under the impression that we’re a little bit married.”

In which Merlin gets conned into spending Christmas with Arthur's family and pretending to be his husband, because somehow this is his life.

Epic and romantic. I love the pining and the danger and the intrigue and especially the character portrayals. Really great tension, and characters are translated wonderfully into a modern setting: Merlin as a brilliant disaster of an antique buyer, and Arthur as a former para in her majesty's army. I also have a thing for home improvement projects in stories, I dunno why. They are very satisfying.
