    Summary

Aziraphale didn’t understand why Crowley kept staring. Oh, he’d always been a wonderful listener, of course. He’d joined Aziraphale for countless lunches and dinners over the centuries, following along, nodding or tossing in a question at all the right places, at least seeming to make eye contact from behind the dratted glasses. It was one of the touchstones of their relationship, that Crowley was a good listener.

Or — their friendship. Yes. Absolutely that. “Relationship”, really, what a foolish slip of thought.

(Ever since the world didn't end, Aziraphale feels like Crowley has been acting strangely. He certainly can't figure out why!)

    Summary

If Aziraphale notices Crowley's attention, he doesn't seem to mind, anyway. He still laughs and talks and savors his food as though it's the most delightful thing he's ever encountered, same as every other time they have lunch together. Or dinner. Or just a quick nibble at that new patisserie, you know, the one with the tulips in the windows, and apparently they have the most scrumptious pain au chocolat, oh, would Crowley like to come along?

Always, Crowley never says. Anywhere. I'd go anywhere with you, as long as you were happy, as long as we were together. It's never been safe to say, too many eyes, too many ears, possibly including those tulips in the windows. And for other reasons.

(Crowley's love for Aziraphale turns out to be requited. That's the plot.)

    Summary

Thousands of years, and when it finally all went sideways, it was completely by accident. Crowley hadn't even been thinking. That was the worst of it, for it to all end because he wasn't even thinking.

He stood in front of the bookshop, and he filled his lungs once more with the smell of paper and cloth and ethereal wings. Waited for the door to shut on him one final time.

(Crowley is pretty sure he's just ruined everything with Aziraphale forever. Except this story actually has a happy ending, so perhaps there are factors he is not aware of.)

    Summary

Really, Aziraphale couldn’t believe he hadn’t realized it before. He didn’t consider himself a particularly unobservant person, after all, and yet —
Hm. Then again, at least this time he hadn’t taken literal centuries to clue in. Perhaps he wasn’t as observant as he thought.
(There is something of a pattern to Crowley's interactions with Aziraphale, now that they are both firmly on Their Own Side.)
