In Steve’s mouth it sounds like a sigh and feels like a caress. He says it again in a hushed whisper and it sends a shiver down the ladder of Bucky’s spine. He says it for a third time and this time it’s a prayer. Steve’s lips drag across his cheek to his temple and he takes his name with him. Each gentle intonation feels like a benediction, like Steve is giving him some tiny, shining piece of himself. Bucky’s insides burn.

“Bucky? Is that you?”
Bucky froze, his hand poised over his cell. That voice. He’d know that voice anywhere. It was rich and deep and so familiar it sent a tidal wave of memories crashing through him. His heart jumped into overdrive and it battered against his ear drums as he swiveled slowly in his seat to look up into the face of Steve motherfucking Rogers.
“Steve?” He could feel his mouth hanging open. Not a good look. He snapped it shut with a click and stumbled to his feet to offer him a hand. “Shit. Hey, man. How are ya? It’s been a while.”
Eight years. It had been almost eight years. Not that Bucky had been counting. But it was hard not to remember the date your beloved boyfriend of four years broke up with you when it just so happened to be your little sister’s birthday and Christmas Eve all rolled into one.
