He grits his teeth through it, already working through his next reply, when Hood takes off his helmet and Tim's world comes to a screeching halt.
He's older, taller, angrier - white in his hair where there was none before, and his domino is red where it used to be black, but that's-
That's Jason's face.
That's his friend from all those years ago.
Jason is twelve when he meets Tim on the streets of Gotham and decides to protect the clueless kid who is going to get himself knifed in an alley. They become friends somewhere along the way.
Timothy Drake is 17 when the Red Hood ambushes him in the Titan's Tower and beats him half to death.
These two facts are not unrelated.

Jason is looking forward to making Bruce pay when a terrified Robin swings into Crime Alley and thinks he's a savior.
He's not, but he's not a monster enough to turn away a crying child, even one he plans to torture later.

Tim's injured, alone in Crime Alley, and the worst possible person finds him.
And yet it doesn't turn out as badly as Tim expected.

That is, until a fifteen year old Tim Drake woke them up in the middle of the night, too sleep deprived to remember that some boundaries are there for a reason.
