It's not what Ted expects. Neither is the rest of the evening.

He takes the piece of paper with Trent’s phone number on it out of his wallet and sticks it under the Tin Man fridge magnet from The Wizard of Oz set Henry sent him for his birthday.

Looking at Trent’s quick scrawl across the page, a lifeline if he ever needs it, some of the pressure in Ted’s chest eases, just a bit.

Still, Ted is placing Trent Crimm, The Independent in the nice fantasy but don't even think about it box.

“I’m sorry Trent, would you mind repeating the question there?”

Besides, Trent probably wouldn't be interested in a proverbial roll in the hay anyway.

    Summary

What’s really a problem is this: Ted Lasso has never lied to Trent before.

He’s been evasive and circuitous. He’s been silly and distracting. He’s been tangential and vague. But he has never outright lied—a rare thing, a precious thing. Something Trent has begun to look forward to, to desire as something unique in the sordid little corner of the world he’s chosen to ply his pen.

So standing in the Crown & Anchor and realizing that Ted Lasso is lying is—new, and terrible, and strangely devastating in a personally subjective way he will not examine at this moment.

(Trent Crimm examines the lie and eventually gets the truth.)
