Alexander Lightwood arrives in a small, sunny beach town somewhere on the Eastern seaboard. Escaping a man who should have loved him but only caused him pain, he leaves New York in order to find peace and safety. In a place that is completely new and where no one knows him, he keeps himself on guard and his head down.
Just as he's trying to keep his walls up and craft a humble new life, Magnus Bane appears and sparks a passion and safety that he never knew love could give him. Let alone from a man like Magnus, who's had more than his share of life's heartache and cares for two children as if they're his own. How long can he keep his walls up and his past hidden before he finds himself falling for him? And how long will it take for his nightmares to come find him again?
- Part 1 of The "Safe Haven" AU Universe
"I'm Magnus. I'd offer you my hand but you've been holding it for the past minute."
Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood, the two that act like a couple. But definitely aren't. They're just friends. Totally not in love with each other. Nope.

The main story as well as a few oneshots of Alec's POV from within the story (aka some repeated scenes, some new ones, all through Alec's eyes)
"You want me," Magnus says, "to pretend to be your boyfriend."
He sounds wholly unimpressed, and Alec has a moment of panic when he hears it out loud.
"Yes," he says. "Temporarily."
"You want me to fake date you," Magnus says flatly. It's not even a question, but more a way of really driving the point home about how dumb the idea is.
Magnus narrows his eyes.
"You do realize that this never works out well in movies, right?" he says. "Ever."
Alec feels a distinct sense of embarrassment creep up now.
Alec has come out, but that doesn't stop his parents from their continuous attempts to set him up with a nice shadowhunter girl. So, what better way to finally get them off his back, than to say he has a boyfriend? Problem solved. Except they now apparently want to meet this guy, who doesn't exist. Thankfully, Magnus Bane -- who encouraged Alec to come out in the first place, and whose silent crush on Alec is just as bad as Alec's crush on him -- is more than happy to help. Even if the night doesn't end up going entirely as planned.
“Is that your way of asking me to cook for you sometime?” Alec says. “'Cause I will.”
The moment the words escape his mouth, Alec finds himself slightly panicking. Because he does not talk like that, ever―in a way that might even be considered flirting―and he still doesn’t understand what it is about Magnus that brings stuff like that out of him. More importantly, he has a boyfriend.
Magnus, however, just looks mildly surprised as their eyes meet.
“My, my. Master chef, good family name, and charming?” Magnus tilts his head ever so slightly. “Careful, Mr. Lightwood,” he says in a low, teasing voice, mouth curving up in a smile. “You’re gonna make me swoon.”
One night, Magnus spots a handsome stranger in the elevator of his apartment building – which wouldn’t be a big deal if said stranger didn’t turn out to be dating Magnus’s neighbor. The stranger soon becomes Alec, and their paths end up crossing more than once. A tentative friendship develops as they slowly get to know each other, and they both find that it’s effortless in a way neither of them has ever known. It's only when other kinds of feelings start getting involved that things become a bit more complicated.
