    Summary

Wei Wuxian is down on his luck.
He’s probably the only legit medium in the city of Lotus, able to contact all manner of dearly deceased spirits and gaggles of ghosts. Still, he makes his living off of bunk palm readings and crystal ball tricks, and it’s barely enough to keep him going. Wei Wuxian is broke. And, he’s about to be very down on his luck. A plague of suspicious hauntings brings him to the attention of the Bureau of Investigation, but he has no idea how involved in it he will be until he meets…
Lan Wangji is the youngest detective in the Bureau, with one of the highest closure rates within recent years’ records. He’s sharp and obsessive, which lends well to his work with investigating. The one thing he can’t account for is ghosts, and he’s a constant skeptic when it comes to the question of their presence…that is, until, he meets Wei Wuxian. They’re thrown together by way of crossing paths in an investigation, but after Lan Wangji’s eyes are opened to the fact that his culprit might not be fully of the flesh, he finds Wei Wuxian more indispensable than he ever thought he would.
    Everybody needs a good partner.

Intricate and plot-heavy, this is a ghost and horror-filled case fic. Wei Wuxian is a medium, even though most of his family don't believe it (there's history there, that is slowly revealed), and his life is turned upside-down when a grinning, toothless woman begins haunting him. And sometimes attacking him. The whistle he wears around his neck can make her go away, but only for a while. He's arrested by Lan Wangji for acting suspicious and being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but it slowly turns into a partnership. Wen Qing comes on board, too, after asking wwx to find her brother.

Spirits and frightening imagery abound (Author writes in a very visual fashion), and it's not light on gore, either. The teenagers get sucked in, and there's something... different about Wen Yuan, who sometimes shows up at sleepovers with Jin Ling with bruises and a distant gaze. The more time wwx and lwj spend together, the more they feel like there was a history, and have dreams about a time long ago when they were Stygian and Monk but it ended badly. And sometimes wwx feels like he's going down that same dark road.

Story's a wild ride, with a tense climax and happy ending.

Very interesting premise, in which the Afterlife is evidently a dumb-ass bureaucracy, just like what we've got here among the living... and sometimes there's an administrative error or whatever, and someone gets returned. The main two stories are Care (3) and Thirty Seven (4). Care is Wei Wuxian's first week back from the perspective of 16-year-old A-Yuan, who is pure and good and TERRIBLY stressed out b/c he just wants to process that he has two dads now, but instead has a big project presentation due in a few days. (He has a couple of panic attacks. His friends are good boys, too.)

Thirty Seven is wwx's POV, and he's... a mess. He doesn't really understand why he's back, and the body is so brand-spanking new and unfamiliar that every single thing is overwhelming. Also, he doesn't want to impose too much on Lan Wangji and A-Yuan. So, you know, lack of communication, misunderstandings, self-worth issues, angst, feels, sharing a bed, the whole nine yards.

******* excerpt from thirty-seven just b/c i thought it was so gorgeous and apt:

Lan Zhan doesn’t smile the way most people do. Most people concentrate their joy into the shape of their mouth and the lines around their eyes. Lan Zhan takes his happiness and distributes it evenly through every cell in his face. There’s less mouth and eye action, but it’s plain. He looks well indeed.

Wwx spends a year tending to lwj's golden core, because only his soulmate can fix its injuries... but lwj is afraid of a soulbond (he has only his parents for a role model) and rejects wwx as soon as he's fully recovered. Wwx is heartbroken, of course, and returns to Lotus Pier and goes into seclusion. Lwj, meanwhile, begins to realize that he's missing something, and that maybe he was wrong about soulbonds being detrimental after all.

    Bookmarker's Notes

I loved this SO MUCH YDEK. It's a VERY fast read, and every single paragraph is delightful, and I'm feeling such simple joy over the ending that I could practically float.

In which lwj has been ignoring wwx for 6 years, but then encounters him (finally, after all that time) at Koi Tower quite nearly dead from soulmate deprivation and suddenly reevaluates his decisions. There's been a whole lot of gaslighting and misinformation and manipulation (and curses) going on, which is slowly uncovered; but meanwhile lwj simply retreats to Lotus Pier with his rediscovered soulmate, marries him the next morning, and settles in with his loving, boisterous and very protective family.

It's a delight, I tell you. I'm delighted. The dialogue is exquisite. The relationships are enchanting. I adore everyone in this fic (except for the bad guys). I almost want to go back to the beginning and read it again RIGHT NOW.

    ***

    “Sect Heir.”

Lan WangJi bows to Jiang Wanyin as deeply as he can while cradling his soulmate in his arms.

“I would seek your permission to be allowed to ask your head disciple to marry me.”

Wei Ying makes a confused murmur, his fingers clutching weakly at Lan Wangji’s wrist. Lan WangJi feels a few hopeful notes of inquiry drift through him.

Yes, he sends back, firmly. Yes. Yes. Wei Ying’s eyelids flutter.

“As soon as he regains consciousness.’ Lan WangJi adds, in case that wasn’t clear.

A-Yuan is here. A-Yuan, who Wei Ying loved so much. A-Yuan, who was taught to laugh just like him. Wangji hugs him to his chest and curls over him, ignoring the way the wounds on his back pull and tear. “I have to take care of you,” he says. “I will not leave you.”

(Or: Lan Wangji comes back from Yiling with a child he does not know how to care for and a black hole in his chest. Somehow, he makes it work.)

Sweet story wherein lwj slowly learns to demonstrate his love while also enforcing rules/boundaries (ljy is not quite so malleable as a-yuan, heh heh).
