Soulmate. In the hours between nothing and sunshine under the curtains, the word has found its way into Graves’ brain.
Now that the light has returned, Graves can take a look at his mark. He doesn’t want to spend too much time thinking about its meaning, about someone being somewhere for him. He does it anyway.
Being someone who had gotten along with most people, but had never had a best friend, he had found the idea of a soulmate both abstract and thrilling. Soulmates, like hippogriffs, were true to their partners. Finding the match to one's mark meant having a companion for the rest of one's days. To Newt, that sounds fantastic.

Fireman Graves saves Newt's cat from the certain doom of being stuck in a tree. Newt, naturally, falls in love.
“Newt,” Tina began slowly. “Are you sure you’ve thought this through.”
He gave her puppy eyes. “My bisexual ass is in crisis here,” he said plaintively. “You can’t expect me to think.”
“Your bisexual ass is a crisis,” she corrected.

It was not until late into the night that something happened, something which would shake the wizarding world to its core. Newt felt it first - stirrings of an unnatural heat building low in his stomach, propping him awake. He never imagined that he would be the first omega to ever exist, and the start of a biological revolution among wizardkind.

“Who are you?” Graves demanded hoarsely.
“I’m Newt. Scamander. Err. Pleased to meet you. I mean, I would’ve been pleased to meet you, under normal circumstances.”
“Scamander.” Graves frowned to himself. For someone who was supposedly in a bad rut, he seemed perfectly in control. “Your accent, it’s British. Any relation to Theseus Scamander? Head of the DMLE?”
“I’m his younger brother.”
“Are you an Auror?”
“No. I’m a magizoologist.”
Graves exhaled, exasperated. “A what? Is this a rescue or are you a hostage?”
“Sort of neither,” Newt admitted.

Newt returns to New York to visit, but when he is drawn into Tina and Mr. Graves' new investigation, he finds himself immersed in a case that challenges his knowledge of magical creatures-- and what he thought he knew about Mr. Graves, the lead investigator who doesn't want the consulting magizoologist anywhere near his job.
"It seems there’s not a species in the world that doesn’t love you, Mr. Scamander.”
