Sidney always knew his family would pick who he ended up with. It was how things were done, and no matter what the outside world thought, he'd never questioned it before because it was just the reality: ice was frozen, getting checked against the boards knocked the wind out of you, one day Sid would be matched to someone his parents and the matchmaker and his aunts and uncles and his community thought was the best fit for him. And best of all, Sidney wouldn't have to worry about it. He would just focus on hockey. He'd deal with it one day. Eventually.
'One day' had seemed so much farther away when he was younger.

So no one was more surprised than he was when he opened his mouth and heard himself blurting out, “Excuse me, ma’am, but I would like to purchase your son.”
Seemingly without hesitation, and before Mary Lou had the chance to respond, Credence burst forth with his own, “Yes, sir, you may have me.”
Then they both fell silent, equally shocked at their words. Merlin’s balls. Somewhere upstate, Graves was sure his father had just burst into laughter and had no idea why.

“Go on,” Tyler said shyly, watching Jamie take the simple gold band out. They would use the same ring when they married Jamie knew, one doing duty as both engagement ring and wedding band. “I hope you don’t think I’m too soppy,” Alpha said. He held out a chicory flower he’d plucked from the riverbank. “Can I put it in your coat if I don’t touch anywhere else?” he asked, and Jamie eagerly nodded. Very carefully Alpha tucked the flower into Jamie’s second from the top buttonhole and then his hands lingered, resting lightly on Jamie’s lapels as they just looked at one another.
“Are you engaged yet?” Tyson bellowed from across the river and both Jamie and Alpha Seguin started and pulled apart.

So for three weeks, I let my cousin follow me around and talk to me about spiders.”
