He can see Buck taking the stairs two at a time, clearing the last floor of the burning apartment building. He can see the ladder at the end of the hallway, the light at the end of a burning tunnel. He can see part of the ceiling give way as he turns, reaching for Buck, too slow, too fucking slow, and Buck—
—is gone, pushed through the floor by the caving-in ceiling, what Eddie was sure was a scream drowned out by the roar of the flames.

———Buck was good at going unseen.
It was a defense mechanism—his parent’s couldn’t get upset with what they didn’t realize was there—and it had only amped up once Maddie graduated. Once she went off to college, Buck had no reason to be a distraction anymore, to try and pull attention off of anyone; so he just got better at it. He could pick things up and set them down without a sound. He constantly walked on the balls of his feet. He even kept his breathing even, slow and low, whenever he wasn’t alone.
Buck was invisible to absolutely everyone.
Well… everyone except Eddie Diaz.

Summary
Eddie has always felt incomplete. He works from home, doesn't socialize, and rarely leaves his home.
Maddie, his boss, noticed his decline in work, and he noticed she's overwhelmed taking care of her brother.
Buck had been abused all his life for his cat hybrid attributes, and now 23, they threw him at Maddies door and left him.
Eddie takes Buck in himself and between helping the hybrid recover, and teaching him love from abuse, feelings between the two develop quickly.Bookmarked by Marie115
