"Hmmnh." John stretches, long and slow. That deep molecular feeling pulls at him. "Now there's a genius idea."

"Your tea will get cold," Sherlock whispers, barely restrained.

    "You'll make more later."

    " "There's a word…" he whispers.

"John?" Hushed. A soft rustle of fabric.

"The feeling when you know you're being watched." He stretches gently and curls his torso in the direction of his love. Eyes still closed, still very near surrendering to the dozy lull of sleep.

The only response is a soft, consciously controlled exhale. Nearer now.

    Affected.

The corner of his mouth quirks up before he is taken by a yawn. "Must be a word for it," he mumbles.

"Paranoia?" Sherlock's breath ghosts over his cheek now. Light is in his voice.

"Git." John stretches once more, slowly blinking. The room is mostly dark, with the grey rose light of dawn weakly filtering through the blinds. Sherlock's very near, and his clear eyes are the first thing he sees. "

    Summary

I remember the night I finally called Sherlock on his “high-functioning sociopath” nonsense. I’d long ago made him stop describing himself like that, trotting out a quotation I'd rehearsed from a medical journal debunking the categorisation. But he still denied having emotions, until one November night I exploded.

“"I swear, if Lestrade’s people were any more incompetent they'd have to be rounded up and put in the zoo.”

I wrote “CONTEMPT is an emotion.” and posted it over the mantelpiece, with the day and time."

    Bookmarker's Notes

"You can't take all the things that make up Sherlock Holmes and separate them into good bits and rubbish bits and acceptable bits because it's all you, and nobody does it right all the time. You got to where you are because of all those parts of you, how they fit together."

    Summary

After Mary’s unexpected death leaves John alone to raise a months-old Rosie, the doctor tries to sort through the wreckage of his new life. Thankfully, Sherlock is there to pick up the broken pieces and put them back together.

A short, endearing fic in which it takes John Watson over half a decade of raising Rosie together with Sherlock to finally realize he’s absolutely in love with the man. (And in which John is the only one who doesn’t realize this.)

    Bookmarker's Notes

“John,” Sherlock said softly, his gaze falling to floor, “before we go any further, I want to make it clear that you shouldn’t mistake my willingness to participate in tonight’s endeavours.”

John frowned at this. “How do you mean? Mistake it for what?”

Sherlock pursed his lips. “Sex isn’t a priority for me, John, never has been. Mainly because I’ve never been attracted to other people in that way; for me, it’s always been about character and intellect. With a few rare exceptions, I have generally found sexual relations to be tedious and unwanted—a distraction.”

John pursed his lips, working through this information. “Do you not enjoy sex, then?” he asked.

Sherlock smiled wryly at John, quirking his lips to the side. “I never said that,” he murmured suggestively and John felt a hot thrill of excitement slide down his spine.

Sherlock took a breath, running his thumb over the back of John’s hands, which were still clasped in his own, hovering in the empty space between their bodies. “I don’t have to be sexually attracted to you to find the act itself meaningful or the process pleasurable. I do still have needs and urges, same as most people. I just prioritize them differently.” Sherlock sighed. “Ultimately, I suppose I just… want you to be aware of what it means to enter into a relationship with me. It’s bound to be maddening and frustrating—especially if you have certain… expectations for that side of things.”

John took a deep breath, his eyes roaming over Sherlock’s face, drinking in the concern and love and consideration in his measured expression. It sent a warm ache through his chest. God, how had it taken him so long to realize how ineffably he loved this man?

John clicked his tongue with a tsk. “So, in other words, you’re telling me that I’d get to spend the rest of my life living with you and loving you, raising Rosie with you, and we’d still get to shag every once in a while?”

Sherlock rolled his eyes and said with an unamused yet playful sigh, “Sure, if that’s how you like to look at it.”
