Daryl has carried so much on his shoulders since the apocalypse began to keep his adopted family alive that he's barely taken time to breathe. But, with the Governor's failed attack on the prison behind them and with Rick working to make the cold stone walls a home for them all, he finally feels that he can relax just a fraction. That is until a life-altering encounter with Rick in the woods one night reveals the secret he's been so desperate to share but mortally afraid of letting out and everything between them changes irrevocably.

AU shooting off after Daryl and Merle are rescued from Woodbury. Glenn realizes that the group would be lost without Daryl and lobbies to have him come back to the prison, even if that means they have to deal with Merle, too.
Having Daryl there at that critical time makes all the difference.
Glenn liked to call Daryl “The Rick Whisperer.” Not to his face, of course. Not usually out loud at all, except to Maggie when they were alone. But in his head, that’s what he usually thought when he saw the two of them together. Daryl seemed to be the only one that could consistently talk sense to Rick. Hershel would try, but somehow Rick seemed more receptive when Daryl was the one talking, even if they said the same thing.

Daryl had seen the wolf many times, lurking around in the forest or staying near his house in the middle of nowhere. The relationship they had was based on mutual respect and unvoiced trust. That is, until one day it all changed, and Daryl learned what had been keeping the wolf in the forest for so long...
