New York Mets shortstop Derek Hale was riding the high of being his team's hero on Opening Day, only to have it come crashing down the very next day when pictures leak of him acting more than friendly with his roommate Stiles Stilinski. Now, not only is Derek outed before he wanted, but he's also a target for more harassment and suddenly single after accusations fly over how the media caught wind of his secret relationship. And he'd thought his biggest issue during the season would be questions over a rumored contract extension and impending free agency.

It wasn't the first time Stiles had totally lost focus while working on an essay, writing a topic that most definitely wasn't the assigned one. It was, however, the first time a teacher—or professor, in this case—decided that his paper was so inaccurate he would have to give the student a first hand lesson in order to right his wrongs. Which, this time, meant teaching Stiles exactly what it was like to be knotted.

In which Derek struggles to navigate his emotions and accept what’s on offer right in front of him. His daemon Nisi is having none of his shit. Stiles and Sofer wait for him to pull his head out of his ass.
Nisi snorts and yanks an errant curl, getting a little nasty in her frustration. “That's bullshit and you know it, Der. You liked it. You liked touching Sofer, you liked smelling Stiles and her in our bed. And I know you can feel it too, you muscle-bound pessimist: how good it is when I’m with them. Why do you refuse to come with me when I go?”

The thing is, Stiles must have a daemon.
Everyone has a daemon.
Well, except things. Things don’t. But that's what they are. Things. Not human. Monstrous.
So Stiles must have one. It's just that Derek's never seen it.
“Have a drink,” John offered, looking over Derek’s shoulder at the bar. “I know that a certain someone would be happy to see you again.”
Derek turned to look over his shoulder, catching sight of a familiar head of messy hair, pale skin, and moles. The exact person he wanted to see behind the bar.
It had been almost five years since Derek saw Stiles, remembering the last night he saw him. How much of a coward he had been, sneaking out of the room before Stiles could wake. He wasn’t any good—for anyone.
And he knew, more than anything, he didn't deserve Stiles.
