    Summary

Black Mesa is a small town, and there’s never been much of a need for fancy names, so the arcade’s actual name – if it ever had one – is pretty much forgotten by the adults and entirely unknown to the kids. It’s a small joint, besides, with capacity for only about fifty people at once, including the bored teenagers working there. Including the Friday regulars, who always go straight to Mortal Kombat in the corner, one at a time, and bicker about if whoever got there first should let the other kid even touch the joysticks, even though they always end up playing together until they need to go home.

(“Ah, young love,” sighs Coomer, watching the boys poke at each other’s prizes. Bubby snorts.)

Half Life: the game everyone exists because of. "Reality" is a complicated mess, and the Science Team can only really start to untangle it all after they finally leave the game. Where are they now, though, if not a video game world that constricts them to very particular roles they were meant for? Who are they now after the game, if not NPCs, or the player? What exactly does it mean, to not be real? They may be living post-game domestic bliss, but that doesn't take away from the things they went through. They've got a lot to unpack.

this fic is part of a series with my other pre-canon boomer backstory fic "could i try again, try again, try again?", but reading that isn't necessary to understand it, just additional fun if you're interested. updates sundays and thursdays!

    Summary

He didn’t realize what it was at first, the back of it was metal and faced the door Coomer came in from. It was just a weird pillar in the middle of the room, he thought, until he found himself in front of it and realized. Suspended in a green liquid, lit by fluorescent lights inside and sleeping, there was a person. He’s wearing a medical gown, and there’s an oxygen mask and other monitoring equipment strapped to him.

“My goodness,” Coomer says without meaning to.
