Summary
First, there is the rage, like nothing Arthur has ever known. It’s hot, hotter than anything, hotter than the kitchen ovens and the blacksmith’s forge and dragon’s breath. It fills him to the brim and carries on, washing over him in waves that scald, and, as Arthur looks around him at the carnage, the man at its centre, he has no idea how he is ever meant to let go of it.
“I can explain,” Merlin says, his eyes still blazing as he kneels there, charred by the fires he lit, blood on his hands. So much blood. “Arthur, sire, please, I can explain.”
First, there is the rage, and then there is a knife at Merlin’s throat.

Summary
He holds a thin band of gold in his hands. His arms had been rising, as if they were about to place the circlet on Arthur's head. Except Arthur wears a crown now, not his circlet, and Arthur had been out at training.
“I was just cleaning it,” Merlin explains.
He places his gloves on the table, leaning against a chair. “Put it on.”
“What?”
He nods at the circlet. It had been what Merlin was about to do, wasn't it? And it will be funny, the peasant turned prince.

Summary
‘You know, I’m going to be fighting them tomorrow,’ Arthur says, ‘and believe me, they will pay dearly for this.’ He touches Merlin’s sore shoulder, brief and gentle. ‘As your champion, Merlin, it’s only fitting that I should wear your token, don’t you think?’
He looks at Merlin, softly smiling, teasing, and Merlin’s cheeks are burning like fire and he can't hold Arthur's gaze.

Summary
Merlin dashes fiercely at the tears that have started to trickle down his face, and waits. Because if Arthur wants to take him back to Camelot as a prisoner, to a cold cell and death in the grey morning – if that is what Arthur wants, Merlin will let him, because he can’t deny Arthur anything.
And Arthur takes Merlin’s shoulders in a hard, almost bruising grip, and he’s breathing hard, and Merlin’s crying messily, because he just can’t seem to stop and he’s more scared than he’s ever been in his life.
