    Bookmarker's Notes

They spent the rest of the day going through the footage. Cygnet ordered them lunch on a company account and kept going without a pause. Somewhere around three in the afternoon, Walter looked in, hesitated, and backed out without saying anything. John had told Cygnet to speed things up by then: he was getting another brief video clip every six seconds.

“So you’re giving us the silent treatment because you think we rigged a lotto game,” John concludes.

Someday Joss is going to have to sit John down and talk to him very seriously about the fact that he’s using first person plural pretty much all the time now. “I’m giving you the silent treatment because you two need to stop barging in on my business every time you get bored.”

    <3

Harold writes the Machine in his head, eyes closed, long hours in the office with the lights off since he does not need them. He doesn't need to see the screen, although he looks every ten minutes or so to check his progress, to see the letters on the monitor confirming what he's building in mind. Now he does not need to eat so regularly, or sleep so regularly, so he doesn't.

    Nathan worries. Nathan always worries.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Cole had been brilliant. Whatever Harold was, he was something beyond brilliant, freakish. She'd already started to pick up on that, but this put it in black and white. What the fuck was he doing? If he liked power, he should have been in a back room somewhere with several bodyguards; if he liked money and the good life, he should have been Harold Crane, here for real. If he was a patriot he should have been in charge of something very secret in the Pentagon. Instead he was running a two-man crusade to, as far as she could tell, commit random acts of kindness.

    Bookmarker's Notes

The next time he sleeps with Reese, he has no excuse, not really. Nor for the next, or the next, and soon it's a regular and oddly comfortable arrangement. Harold comes by Reese's apartment if a number's problems are resolved before late evening, and they… resolve their own problems. Yes. That's what Harold decides to think of it.

It does seem to make Reese even more efficient at handling the numbers, which is good. In a way. Harold can't help but wonder if this is somehow the Machine's intention, but he supposes he's probably attributing far too much subtlety to it.
