"I can't think about this right now," she said aloud, ignoring the images her mind conjured up. "If we're going to get to White Forest, I can't afford to be distracted."The vortigaunt made an extended shrug. "Indeed."
"And I'd really appreciate it --"
The roar of an engine echoed across the canyon, and she looked up to see that yes, Gordon was going to jump the car right over the gap, first onto the precariously tilted center of the bridge, then as that lurched further and cars began to slide, straight off the end and right onto the mine's loading dock. By the time she'd even thought to worry, he'd already reached the near side and emerged from the car, looking as if he couldn't believe he'd done it either.
"I'd appreciate it if you didn't mention this to Gordon," she finished as he started to climb up to their level.
"Of course," it said, just as Gordon reached the control room behind them. She tapped on the glass, and he gestured to the car proudly before remembering that he had to open the door for them.
Can't think about it just now, she told herself again as they reached the car and said their goodbyes to the vortigaunt. Too much to worry about, too many things that can go wrong if we don't get to White Forest . . . but maybe later, when we both have a little room to breathe.
That's if we ever have room to breathe again. And if we don't get killed. And if, how'd the vortigaunt put it, if reciprocation is a possibility.
As the vortigaunt raised the gate, Gordon got in and glanced over at her. On impulse, she winked at him.
He blinked, and an astonishingly goofy grin -- the first real smile she'd seen on him since the Hunter attack -- spread over his face. Still grinning, he gunned the engine and hit the accelerator. Alyx whooped and hung on. Let's hear it for reciprocation.

Mu had known that Murrue had a best friend, but didn't see said best friend until the fall of 2004, already over two years into their relationship. He just imagined Natarle Badgiruel exactly like how Murrue described her—cool and unruffled, but in reality very warm underneath the iron exterior.Natarle only consented to come back from her job in another country because of her best friend's wedding, Mu having sprung the question after the burial of Murrue's father, and was also curious to see what kind of man Murrue had decided to marry. So when Murrue went up to Natarle in the airport and threw her arms around her, with Murrue standing slightly shorter than Natarle because of the latter's heeled shoes, Natarle saw a tall blond man with an uneasy grin on his boyish face, while Mu saw a military woman with ice enough to freeze him when she fixed him with a steely gaze.
"So this is your boyfriend?" was Natarle's first question.
"Yes," Murrue said with a tiny smile. "Or, actually, fiancé, now that I think of it. It feels weird though."
"He smiles a bit too much."
It was with gentlemanly grace that Mu bit back a hasty laugh at this well-received comment, and snapped a photo of the two ladies together at Murrue's request. Thankfully, Natarle, after the initial brusque remark, gave him a small nod that silently bade Mu, Take care of her, or it's a bullet in your brain.
He remembered how he had shivered internally at that. Natarle seemed like the woman who takes a promise too much to heart, after all.

“Good morning, Mercy.”“Good morning, Mr. Luthor.”
“I’m having the worst hangover of all time. Remind me to never host one of those things again.”
“Have you taken any medicine?”
“Yes, but come to think of it, could you bring me some more?”
She left and came back a couple minutes later with the bottle. He took one more with his juice.
“Would you like some water, Sir?”
“Oh God, yes.”
She left again, and as he watched her, he got the vague impression that he had seen her last night. He shouldn’t have, since she’d been upstairs the whole time to be on call in case he needed her. Then, it dawned on him: Maybe he hadn’t found his own way to bed.
She returned and handed him the water, which he finished in a matter of seconds. At that point, he was too full of liquid to eat anymore. He sighed as he stood up and faced her.
“Everything went smoothly last night, Mercy?”
“Yes, Sir.”
“Nothing to be concerned about?”
“No.”
He nodded, and a smile tugged a little at the corner of his mouth.
“Alright then, what are we doing today?”
