Summary
After beating Lucien, the Mighty Nein leave together, and Essek gets sent back home, alone, afraid, and being kept in the dark about the problems his friends are having. However, when he is told that killing the main representative of the city's wishes didn't stop its influence over certain people, he is determined to help.
"Essek is shaking, his carefully built façade slipping away. Caleb touches his wrist, softly, then holds his arm. He keeps using physical contact when Essek stops hiding what he is feeling, and he does not know if the driving force is pity or a wish to manipulate him. Or maybe something else entirely."

Summary
Caleb invites Astrid and Eadwulf all over to his house. It feels dangerous, like he is throwing care out the window. He knows most of what they know of each other, knows enough to be able to deescalate the situation if needed. He takes a minute to commiserate over the fact that most of his friends are incredibly dangerous people with big protective instincts after he informs Essek, a smile on his face that he hopes will make him look calmer about the dinner than he is.
