    Summary

She hears Mildred’s feet shuffle loudly to the door – the girl is barefoot and still manages to make more noise than Sybil’s socked feet – and doesn’t close her timepiece until she hears her near the door.

“Uh,” Mildred’s voice startles Hecate into looking up. She’s halfway out the lab, stands in the middle of the doorframe and looks like she’s dredging every ounce of courage from her heart. “M-miss Pentangle said the same to me, o-once. To be kind to myself? Except she said it about – well, did you learn it from her? When you were children?”

She snaps her mouth closed and her cheeks go red. Hecate feels her own face start to heat up and doesn’t like the way Mildred looks scared but confident that she’ll receive an answer.

“No,” Hecate says, stands very still. “No, I’ve just begun to learn.”

“Oh,” Mildred nods, looks relieved. “Well, I-I’m glad you’re talking to her again, then. Y-you should be kind to yourself, too.”

Mildred looks like she can’t believe she’s opened her mouth and said those things. Frankly, Hecate can’t either.

    “Mildred.”

    “Hm?”

    “Go to bed.”

    Summary

This is silly, Hecate thinks and almost turns right back around. It’s not as if Miss Bat has been particularly kind to her this year. She's suffered quite a bit of scares since Mildred Hubble’s begun to sleep under their roof, but Miss Bat and Hecate have never developed the type of relationship to exchange birthday gifts.

So why is she here in the dead of the night with her fist raised to knock on Gwen’s door?

(Is it Gwen’s birthday, already? Oh, I had hoped to give her something special this year. She always was one of our favorite singers as children, don’t you remember, Hiccup?)

    And of course.

Of course she knows why she’s here.

The long nights laying on the cobblestone, feet propped up against the wall as Pippa charmed the ceiling to look like the evening sky, just as the sun was about to set. The way her eyes drooped and her cheeks hurt from smiling, the heavy weight of Pippa’s hand in hers. The red and orange and pink of the sky behind her eyelids, and Esper Vespertillo’s calming voice drifting through Hecate’s small room.

Hecate takes a nervous breath, remembers Pippa’s kind and open face, and knocks once.

    Summary

Hecate tries not to drag her feet as they come closer to the group gathered around a long table covered in sweets and drinks. She wishes she could have a few more minutes alone with Pippa, at least enough to get her bearings; but it’s Pippa’s birthday, and she refuses to be selfish. Refuses to bring down Pippa’s bright mood with her own dourness and insecurities. She even does her best to smile, a small, tense lift of her lips that makes her face feel hot and her jaw clench.

I can't seem to help myself with these 5 times things of late...

Essentially, 5 times HB helps Mildred (being adorable along the way) and one time she helps her in return.

Featuring Pippa here and there, and mentions of her elsewhere.

    Summary

What if, when Petunia Dursley found a little boy on her front doorstep, she took him in? Not into the cupboard under the stairs, not into a twisted childhood of tarnished worth and neglect—what if she took him in?

Petunia was jealous, selfish and vicious. We will not pretend she wasn’t. She looked at that boy on her doorstep and thought about her Dudders, barely a month older than this boy. She looked at his eyes and her stomach turned over and over. (Severus Snape saved Harry’s life for his eyes. Let’s have Petunia save it despite them).

Let’s tell a story where Petunia Dursley found a baby boy on her doorstep and hated his eyes—she hated them. She took him in and fed him and changed him and got him his shots, and she hated his eyes up until the day she looked at the boy and saw her nephew, not her sister’s shadow. When Harry was two and Vernon Dursley bought Dudley a toy car and Harry a fast food meal with a toy with parts he could choke on Petunia packed her things and got a divorce.
