“Listen to me, Buck,” Bobby tells him lowly, but anything louder and Buck thinks his eardrums would shatter. His whole world has been whisper-quiet and he’s anxiously waiting for the inevitable noise that breaks through. “You did everything you could. You got him here, kid, and that counts for a hell of a lot.”
Buck searches Bobby’s face for any ounce of hope he can steal for himself—but his heart feels like a cavernous void, and it seems dangerous to put something so bright next to it.
