    It's on AO3!

I'm a sucker for deep looks at what makes characters tick, outside opinions that don't necessarily know all the ins and outs of the plot and thus can highlight individual aspects without distraction, and Expert Level Sarcasm. This combines all of the above.

    Summary

Let us consider the fact that the Jedi Order is a monastic religious organization based out of a temple, with five basic tenets of faith.

Ch 1: Death, yet the Force (meeting Anakin)
Ch 2: Chaos, yet Harmony (teaching Anakin)
Ch 3: Passion, yet Serenity (teaching a teenaged Anakin, good grief)
Ch 4: Ignorance, yet Knowledge (Anakin is a Knight now, why is he still Obi-Wan’s problem?)
Ch 5: Heresy, yet Orthodoxy (actual plot? Ie, Clones and Sith)
Ch 6: Emotion, yet Peace (epilog)

Ch 7: extras / deleted scenes

Possibly the only fic I've ever found that takes the idea of the Jedi being a monastic order and following a religion seriously. Even better because the author doesn't shy away from the less uplifting sides of the Jedi. A very cool read. (But budget yourself plenty of time and be braced for philosophy.)

This is, by far and away, one of my favorite FFVIII fics ever. I particularly adore the author's take on Squall; so many people write him as though the character development throughout the game never happened. Larathia's Squall is sparing with words, quiet, deeply capable, intensely pragmatic, and Highly Amused at the asinine things that his friends get themselves into.

In 1993, Gilderoy Lockhart points a stolen wand at Harry Potter and Ron Weasley with the intent to Obliviate them.

The wand doesn't backfire. Gilderoy's "discovery" of the Chamber of Secrets is a short-term success.

Other consequences are not short-term at all.

    Bookmarker's Notes

I'm fond of this author's works, but this one is my favorite, because it dismisses the obligatory Romance plot-thread in favor of developing a wide span of character relationships. (Which is characteristic of all their works, but the absence of a romantic relationship for the main character meant that the other relationships were even more in the foreground.) And for me, the lack of smut scenes is a serious plus. I also really liked that the Voldemort plotthread is fully developed, with all the characters playing a role... and finished by about halfway through the story, allowing the rest of the story to focus on the aftermath and the changes that wizarding society has to face eventually.

    Bookmarker's Notes

This story more or less single-handedly got me back into the FMA fandom, after I stalled out on it over ten years ago. (I didn't really care for the 2003 anime. So it goes.) The action/mystery plot is fascinating, and seeing how people adjust to an Ed who is increasingly committed to doing something about the mess the country is in, while still remaining fiercely himself, is loads of fun. I do wish that the main plotline weren't resolved with so little active involvement from the main characters, but that's a minor blip, and the intricate loyalty-relationships and action make up for that.

(It also gives Heinkel and Darius a lot of play, which I adore, because they really deserve more love. For minor, last-minute additions to the storyline, they're awesome characters, and the cross-generational friendship they have with Ed in canon is really explored and expanded here.)

(I do have to wonder where this idea that Ed swears like a sailor came from. Speaking as someone who sticks to the Japanese versions, he never struck me as the cursing type; he's insolent and not particularly respectful, but that's not quite the same thing.)
