    Summary

Lan Wangji was barely seventeen the day he became a god, his eyes burning with molten gold while his gaze never left Lan Xichen's, a silent promise passing between them.
    .
    ..
    .
Lan Zhan was barely six when he had sat at the steps of his mother's confinement and had stared silently into the night, heard the whispers of his seniors around him, their sorrowful and hungry gazes. He had been seven when the elders had told him, as it is your elder brother's fate to be sect leader one day, Lan Zhan, so it is your fate to be a sect god.

    --

And here is the thing: many cultivators -- most of the Lan sect elders and disciples included -- see it as a great honor, to be made into a god. Wen Ruohan proclaimed himself one, his age and powerful cultivation lending credit to the ruse, but this close to being one himself, Lan Wangji could see that it was not quite true. Could see that he was mortal still, and he'd told Lan Xichen as much, that they had a chance to defeat the sun if only they rallied together.

But the truth is, Lan Wangji didn't see himself as much of a god, and felt no happiness at being turned into one, just as Lan Xichen felt no happiness losing the only brother he's ever had.

    Summary

"No." It was a silent hiss, barely heard over the wind, but Lan Wangji glanced over to Sizhui, their A-Yuan, looking positively murderous as he was leaning on his guqin in exhaustion, a shallow cut on his forehead still bleeding slightly and staining his ribbon red. "Respect, senior, but you will not go after Senior Wei."

    --

Wei Wuxian was no man any more.

He had stopped being a man the moment he'd fallen to his death at Wen Chao's hand, down, down, down into the Burial Mounds where the screams of the dead echoed through the river of corpses. The impact of his fall had well and truly killed him then, shattering his bones and breaking his body apart as he lay there, empty eyes staring at the clouded sky. Something inside of him had snapped then, as raindrops fell onto cool skin in red droplets, his head lolling to the side and coming face-to-face with the mangled remains of some black-clad cultivator, and Wei Wuxian had broken down and started sobbing, his ribcage protesting as his lungs were being hacked up, and then he'd started laughing relentlessly when the pain had gotten too much.

He hated, hated, hated Wen Chao -!

    Summary

There was a well-kept secret, hidden away in the Cloud Recesses by all of the Lan clan and its sub-clans, protected by the mist and the morning dew. It was the reason for the many, many rules that were inscribed on the Wall of Rules, and the reason as to why almost no outsider ever married into the clan.

The secret had to do with long shadows and dark nights; with proportions distorted and patched up wrongly, with the high notes of Inquiry and the cadences of musical cultivation so complicated and painstakingly perfect that it was a language all of its own. Of forehead ribbons and restraint -- and of many, many, many eyes gleaming in the darkness.

The cultivators of Gusu Lan were not made up of humans at all, but of human-shaped things that played pretend for generations upon generations because their forefathers had done the same.

    Lan Wangji hated it.

    Summary

“Lan Zhan, you have to leave,” Wei Wuxian found himself saying, although this time it sounded less like an order and more like a complaint.

“I can stay today,” Lan Wangji offered as he resumed his hair petting.

“This won’t be well received,” Wei Wuxian stated, matter-of-factly. He did not need to specify by whom, because not a single person in the cultivation world would actually receive that information well.

    “Even by Wei Ying?”

Wei Wuxian took a deep breath and rested his forehead against Lan Wangji’s shoulder. His heart shouldn’t be beating in the pace it was, it did not seem healthy.

“Lan Zhan, you can’t just say things like that,” his breathing was open-mouthed now. “Without any sort of warning, with such a thick face.”

“Do you want me to stop?”

    God, no.

(During the Yiling Laozu arc, Wen Ning wakes up a day earlier, when Wei Wuxian and Wen Qing were right by his side to contain him.

Or, how Lan Wangji’s visit to the Burial Mounds should have gone down.)
