    Summary

In 1947, Master Sergeant James B. Barnes's surviving field journals were posthumously published as the classic war memoir The Night War. Now a high school history classroom mainstay and required reading at West Point, this highly anticipated 60th Anniversary Edition presents the original, unedited text alongside detailed historical notes that provide important context to the extraordinary wartime heroics of Captain America and the Howling Commandos.

    Bookmarker's Notes

This is one of the vivid, fully fleshed, and heart-wrenchingly realistic portrayals of Bucky and the other Howling Commandos that I have read in the MCU. Though fictional, it captures the feel of an actual wartime diary and grounds itself firmly in relation to actual, painstakingly researched WWII history, doing a magnificent job of filling in what could have been the lived reality of this character had CATFA and beyond been historical truth.

One of my favorite aspects of this fic is how (unlike the MCU itself ever did), it fully confronts the racism and discrimination that both Gabe Jones and Jim Morita would have faced from command and fellow soldiers alike. (Just to clarify, Bucky and the rest of the team are staunchly supportive of their comrades here, and Bucky is deeply critical of such racism in a way that never feels the least bit disingenuous or forced - it simply comes across as a natural dimension of his experience and his character.)

Make sure you read this with tissues handy, as between the grippingly realistic portrayal of the horrors of war and the reader’s knowledge of what fate awaits Bucky in the end, you will sorely need them.

When they came, they came for Aziraphale.

In retrospect, they probably should not have given Crowley quite so much time to prepare.

    Bookmarker's Notes

This is the complex, deeply developed, rooted in historical accuracy exploration of the Howling Commandos that I always wanted, layered with brilliant metafiction, research, metascholarship, and intersectionality like a deliciously layered dessert.

    This. Is. My. Canon. Now.
