    Summary

Clumsy hands in a dark room. Crossed out. There is something

    underneath the floorboards.

Crossed out. And here is the tabernacle

                                                                                                    reconstructed.

Here is the part where everyone was happy all the time and we were all

                   forgiven,

even though we didn’t deserve it.

    Summary

Abruptly, Jerome considered the full picture. Five, if he were wearing a mask and had his long hair messily upswept like he did now, wouldn’t obviously be a young man. He wouldn’t be anything, except—except oddly beautiful, which was hard to accept.

“You’re staring,” Five said, with an edge of defensiveness. “I don’t like it when people stare.”

Jerome rolled his eyes, amused again. “That makes two of us, precious. I don’t let on, though.”

Five scowled more fiercely than Bruce did on his worst days. “Why do you keep calling me—”

“Because you’re adorable,” Jerome said. “You’re like, what, a hundred-and-twenty-pound killing machine with hair that’d make a Disney princess jealous? Look at yourself.”

Five just stared at him, briefly chewing his lower lip. “I don’t like to. I bet you don’t, either.”

    Summary

“Where’s this place, exactly?” asked Jeremiah, as Bruce backed them into the street and sped off.

“Midtown,” Bruce replied, swerving to avoid a cluster of people that looked somewhat unruly.

“Are you going to tell me what these accommodations are?” Jeremiah pressed. “Safe house?”

“Penthouse,” Bruce corrected, taking the next turn at breakneck speed. “My city residence.”

Jeremiah sat back and lifted the handkerchief, eyeing the bloodstain. At least none was fresh.

“You sure know how to show a guy a great time,” he deadpanned, suddenly feeling drained.

    Summary

The first and third pieces, Triage and Darkroom, can be read independently of each other with no harm done (it's worth mentioning that Triage does nonetheless contain events relevant to Darkroom). Similarly, the second piece, The Talk, can be read as a stand-alone. If you wish to read the last five pieces in this series, please note that you'll likely need to have read everything from Darkroom forward. Continuity matters quite a bit.

Somehow even better than this author's Delicate, Dangerous, Obsessed series.

    Summary

“An ultimatum, then,” [Jeremiah] said with startling gravitas. “I won’t just be your plaything. This isn’t a game, I’ve put it all on the line, and I won’t just do whatever you want for scraps anymore, Bruce. I’ve given you all of myself, and now? I need all of you.”

“What’s that even supposed to mean?” Bruce asked helplessly, despising himself for having lost control.

“Bruce,” Jeremiah sighed almost tenderly, scrabbling above his head. He brought a shard of scrap-metal up against Bruce’s throat. “My lover, my heart. My fearless Jack of Spades. Figure it out.”

Bruce delivered a skull-cracking blow to the side of Jeremiah’s head before he could press the metal into Bruce’s throat any harder, rolling off him in sheer exhaustion.

Flawless. One of the twists in this will make old school DCU fans gasp.
