Lan Xichen looks at his husband. Now that he is closer, he sees just how thin these inner robes are; they shiver and flutter with every nervous breath. Without those extra layers, the slim curves of his muscles are clear. Without the headpiece, Meng Yao is left with a plain knot and a cascade of dark hair falling over his shoulders. And there is the damp sheen of scented oils along the length of his collarbone, exposed: a sign that Meng Yao has bathed since Lan Xichen was detained. He can smell the sandalwood and lavender.
“Does it please you,” Meng Yao breathes, “Zewu-Jun?”He has prepared for the wedding night, Lan Xichen realises.

The honourable Zewu-Jun takes a Wen prisoner of war as his husband, against his uncle's advice. Meng Yao rises to the occasion.

It’s a sobering thought for someone facing middle age to wrestle with, this notion one might be less than appealing in bed, and while he’d always known he was no Don Juan, Stede thought himself perfectly adequate in the art of making love. But ‘perfectly adequate,’ when facing the prospect of reuniting with the man that may very well be the love of his life, feels (pathetic, mortifying, distressing) like a quandary.
